Lt. Cmdr. Mike Dahlgren (Bill Paxton) gives Lt. Andrew Tyler (Matthew McConaughey) some advice about what it takes to be a sub captain.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this World War II action thriller, American reconnaissance agents learn that a German submarine is sinking. The doomed ship carries an Enigma Machine, a special coding device that allows high-level Axis forces to send messages that can't be read without a similar encryption mechanism. Obtaining a working Enigma device would be invaluable for the Allied war effort, so a U.S. sub is sent out to rescue the machine. However, German forces have already picked up the sub's distress signal and are en route to rescue their comrades. U-571 features a distinguished cast, including Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel, and Jon Bon Jovi.

Bill Paxton was easily one of the best supporting actors ever. He could do anything, never type cast. He wasn't a jerk Captain, just utterly professional in all respects.

I had many problems with this movie but some scenes stand out. This perfectly defines what it takes to be a leader. Very well written.

"Asking men to follow orders that may even result in their deaths." That part gets me every time.

Truly a Great Clip with Great Acting. We all think of our superiors as idiots when they criticize our ability but here Paxton actually takes the time to explain his reasoning WHY and at the end of the scene Andy knows he is 100% CORRECT!

Bill Paxton died too soon. I could watch him in anything. He was funny in true lies too. Insane range as an actor

Interesting-- you know a the start of the war there was a lot of OLDER experienced sub captains that had to be replaced-- just not aggressive enough. They had come up in the late 1920's and the depression era 1930's. Money was very tight, and competition for command slots very keen. Officers could bilge their careers with just one minor mistake, one black mark in their records. Such was the peacetime 30's navy. When war came, a lot of these guys just couldn't make the transition-- too cautious. It wound up being that a lot of sub skippers ended up being about 25 years old...and VERY aggressive...

Remember Bill Paxton played a used car salesman in "True Lies". He peed his pants.

Being a "Leader" is not an easy matter. Not "You are smart or anyone who wants to be, you can be." It means responsibility, responsibility for your own duties and responsible for the actions of their own subordinates.
[To everyone who is about to be a "Leader" in the future.]

And this was one of the advantages of the Red Army at that time. Not only did the commanders not hesitate, but they felt joyful excitement at the thought of sending their subordinates to death. ''Some/Most of you will die. But that is a sacrifice I'm willing to make''

Lt. Tyler sure had the thinking cap on for this one, didn't he? I think he just had this epiphany on what he was told at the academy that as an officer, of any rank, even on the ground level, that you would have to do the same thing (sacrifice lives) who are YOUR your subordinates. MILITARY 101

It is pronounced "Sub-meh-reh-ner"

Not "Sub-mer-een-er"
