During our visit to the Toyota Motors North America headquarters, we spent some time getting to know about Lexus Teammate, a Level 2 autonomy system coming to the LS 500h for the 2022 model year.

Lexus' Global Manager of Strategic Communications Paul Williamsen showed us how the system can automatically maintain speed, remain centered in the lane, recommend lane changes and make them automatically, all while working in concert with the driver rather than fighting against them. When conditions are safe the system allows hands-free operation on highways where HD precision map data is available. Sensors monitor eye movements to ensure the driver is paying attention to the road and checking their mirrors before changing lanes.

It uses a combination of cameras, Radar, Lidar and sophisticated computer vision algorithms to work its magic. It's a very smooth and intuitive system, and much more impressive than standalone adaptive cruise and lane-centering tech.

Cool but let's be honest here.. It's no Tesla autopilot.

I worry about a hacker taking control of the wheel.

You basically did majority of the assist, it cannot maneuver, change lanes, go through sharp curves, avoid obstacles or debris on the road without your help. However, it’s a cool feature but needs for more upgrades.
