Harmony vs counterpoint

I appreciate this explanation. It might help to add that when working the Harmony out, think vertically (homophonically). Then, while working out the Counterpoint, think horizontally (polyphonically). Creating a counterpoint is writing a line that supports the primary melody yet possesses independence, meaning it could potentially stand on its own. Counterpoint has been the single-most helpful aspect of musical study for me.

COUNTERPOINT: the technique of setting, writing, or playing a melody or melodies in conjunction with another, according to fixed rules. JS Bach uses Counterpoint in his Fugues in the Well Tempered Clavier. Look up any fugue this is a quick find counterpoint is used.

HARMONY: harmony is generally understood to involve both vertical harmony and horizontal harmony. Chords or moving chordal progression under a melody eg. ( Uppercase Major lower case minor) -
I V vi IV or vi IV I V play those chords stick a melody on it you have yourself a top 10!!!

THANK YOU, thank you, thank you so VERY much! I have always LOVED "counter point" melodies, yet I have trouble (as a non-musically trained person) to explain what I mean to other people. I even, years ago actually REFERED to it as "Counterpoint" but my wife, who plays piano some. Didn't get what I meant. Thank You for verifying for me that I DID know what I was saying ( maybe, just not explaining myself well.)
