Why Brits Love Marmite

One of the most famous British food staples is Marmite - you either love it, or hate it! As an expat in the UK, I tried using marmite in 3 different: do you agree with my final verdict??

I am an American and I love Marmite, I always bring a couple big jars back when I visit the UK. I like it on buttered toast with think slices of white cheddar and cucumber. I put a teaspoon in stews and have glazed beef with it too.

I'm afraid nobody from the other side of "The Pond" gets what us Brits call toast. It is not a limp slice of warmed bread with a hint of colouration on it. Our toast is dark, possibly slightly carbonised in places and very crisp. It is buttered whilst still red hot and immediately a thin layer of Marmite is applied, and then "straight down the hatch". BOOTIFUL!

As a Canadian of a British background, I do love Marmite. However my Canadian friends and family this I'm completely mad and they think it's disgusting! I'm now off to try some Marmite pasta for dinner! ;) Your reaction was fantastic! LOL

I have Marmite on toast every morning for breakfast. I love it.

The way I try to describe Marmite to a 'not-knower' is to say if you take a really mature cheddar, but then you "remove the cheddar" from the equation, the sharp-salty-savoury thing left, is kinda Marmite.

Marmite and cheese savoury bites -sheet of ready roll pastry, water some marmite down with warm water (as weak as you like) and 'paint' half the sheet with it. Cover that with grated cheese, fold over, cut in bitesize fingers and bake in the oven.

Make your toast, butter the toast, put a little bit of marmite on your knife, scrape the marmite off of the knife back into the jar, rub the knife across the toast. There will, most likely, still be too much marmite on the toast.

Marmite on hot buttered toast is heaven on earth. Something else I love, and was a staple of my childhood, but seems to be relatively unnown outside my perculiar family, is marmite and cucumber sandwiches. Just made from simple buttered white sliced bread spread with marmite and then topped with thin slices of cucumber. Delicious with a cup ot tea.

As for a recipe it could be used in a roux based cheese sauce. Also McVities used to make Marmite Mini Cheddars in the 90s loved these.

Love it especially in a toasted Sandwich spread on both sides with a nice thick slice of Davidstow Cheddar.

Love love love it. Thick white bread, real butter, marmite spread THIN. Looks like the Marmite is waaay too thick on your toast.
