You could call it a space odyssey on Earth. Four NASA researchers have spent the last year living inside a simulated Mars habitat, separated from families and careers, and subjected to challenges they would likely face living isolated on the red planet. This weekend the four crew members are expected to finally step outside their mock-Mars base. Craig Boswell reports.

I can live on Mars with no human contact for 5 years just fine! As long as the whole “living of Mars” bit is dealt with, I could go 5 years with no humans easily

Does it also have the 38% the gravity of earth as well! That's very important if you are preparing for Mars, or you are just messing around, at government expense!

The fact they made a real life bio dome and didn't call Polly Shore is a tragedy.

They watched TV.... Our ancestors would be ashamed of how lazy we've all become as TV and radio didn't even exist. Yet they made it...

And then in a planet where you die if you don't get stuff done and there's no help coming. Watching TV could cost so much time you can't waste.

Send me to Mars. They'd have to make me stop doing rounds and checking stuff as I'll work with duct tape holding me together. Already did that on Earth moving 400 pound drums by hand as tape held my guts in. Felt lighter than 200 pound ones...

That would be psychologically worse than being on the way to Mars or living on Mars, because there no guarantee they will go, and all they gotta to do to come is step leave the program. And because at least on Mars you would have the greatest motivator in human history, knowing every inch you move up there controls our future. Being arguable the most important humans to ever live.

Maybe to some that may be hard, but to others it would be just what they need to press on.
