How To Trap Chipmunks

A brief and informative instructional video on how to easily, effectively and safely trap the elusive and destructive chipmunks on your property. Two sure-fire methods are explained: (1) Havahart No-kill Catch & Release Trap and (2) The "Plank-of-Death" 5-Gallon Bucket Trap. We’ve been infested with chipmunks... beginning with cute little critters around our bird feeders, then holes in the ground, disappearing annuals, strawberries, destroyed flower beds, etc. Somehow, one got inside our house the other day and left disturbing evidence of its presence upstairs, downstairs and in the basement.... eating my wife’s beautiful ivy plants in our guest bedroom, etc. Thanks to your excellent video, we set up 'the bucket of death' near the surviving ivy and went to bed. This morning, we found the drowned critter in the water. He had a good meal prior to his demise. Thanks a lot, Rob! Great service to humanity!

I'm telling u I was all for live and let live until they started to burrow under the slab that holds my pool pump...rat bastards did more damage in 2 days than I ever thought possible. I've had chipmunk damage on many cars, lawn tractors and lawn mowers. The plank of death and hav-a-heart traps have worked for me.

Hi Rob, I just finished watching your great video on trapping chipmunks with a pail of water and seeds. Well, I followed your instructions for the Plank of Death. But unfortunately it does not work, here in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. My chipmunks would walk the plank, and even walk around the edge of the pail, but they would not jump into the water. Then while at Agway, a woman explained that I was missing one important aspect. You have to use Black Oil Sunflower seeds that float, and most importantly, you must cover the entire surface of the water. In a regular large pail, that is about two small hand-fulls. As soon as I started doing this, I immediately started catching chipmonks every day. In order for them to jump into the pail, they cannot see water, only seed. Thanks again for your great work. This was very helpful. I caught the Chipmonks in the Havahart cage and then tenderly re-located them into a tub of water, cage and all. This is way better (and faster) than to walk the plank into the bucket and struggle for a long tortuous time eventually dying of exhaustion.

I though the bucket trap was a joke. HOWEVER, I caught my first one overnight! The ramp works without anything on top of the bucket. I drilled 2 screws in the end of the ramp to hang over inside the bucket, so it couldn't fall off. Was shocked, quite honestly!!

I had chipmunks causing damage to my garage and driving my Westie nuts so I tried the bucket method with great success! Next to a wood pile I used peanut butter and seeds up a board to a 5 gal. bucket. The one thing I did differently is to put a styrofoam bait container with seeds on top in the water so they were more visible.
Got 9 chippers in 3 days! Nice video!

Bucket trick doesn’t work for me, I even put a layer of seeds on top of the water, got 2 red squirrels but chipmunks won’t touch it

So you don’t have to cover up all of the water’s surface with seeds? I thought that was the way to trick them. They just dive in the water anyway?

I tried the bucket method but the birds ate all of the seeds on the board in about 5 minutes. Never did catch a chipmunk. I will keep trying.

Used the bucket system and worked great. Chipmunk srecute but do awful damage. I was told that using a trap you must drive them at least 5 miles away or they'll return quickly
