Leaving your laptop plugged in does technically cause unnessasary stress on the battery... however it's so minimal that by the time you physically notice, you probably would have updated your laptop to a newer one anyway. I've had my laptop 3 years now and I always leave it plugged in and I've noticed no difference what so ever since the first day I got it. A fully charged battery lasts all day still.
