my best no-by tip: delete tiktok and instagram. then you don't know what you're "supposed" to be buying :)

When I did a no-buy my only "cheatable" rule was for "OMG, not gonna find this again ever or for a very long time" stuff. Which in my case was a winter coat for my kid that normally cost $200 but was $10 at a consignment store. Actual fantastic deals on things we will use, and not "30 percent off the thing that's often on sale."

Project Pan is a really interesting idea. At first I was thinking, “well, yes, of course, I already finish my shampoo, lotion, deodorant etc. before I get another one”. But then I thought about all the books I own and haven’t read or the Paintgem kits and coloring books and I realized I really should be applying this to other aspects of my life.

My best low buy tip is to spend time curating, sorting, cleaning and looking after your stuff. You gain gratitude for what you have, plus it looks more appealing clean and organised. Let’s say it’s makeup - having a new set of curated, new looking makeup on your vanity every week with clean brushes will give you joy and dopamine. If you got into the scent craze, burn your candles and spray your perfume- try layering 2 perfumes! Make a point to scent your baths/ showers. Using the items and making little rituals will help you get the dopamine hits you’re craving.

My no-buy has one rule - don't buy unless you're replacing. This works for food, underwear, toilet paper but also rules out beauty, clothes. It's nice to think of one rule when I'm at the shops rather than having to check my own terms and conditions!

I told myself about 3 years ago I was going to finish all my lotions, body sprays etc and I’m still working on It made me realize how long it actually takes to use these products up. 🤦‍♀️

I've been seeing no buy videos popping up like crazy for the upcoming year. I wonder if it's just the algorithm bringing them to me, or if there's a change on the horizon because so many people (including myself ngl) have overcomsumed. Or is this merely another trend and people will "break" their no buy once it isn't in fashion anymore.

not wanting to be/feel restricted is why I'm doing a low-buy year versus a no-buy year. I want to have the option to not be on uber-budget when I'm at a comic book convention. and also be able to say yes if my mom asks me to go shopping w/her. I'll still have rules to how/ what I spend money on, but I still want the option to spend on the table.

Unfollowing accounts that show a lot of new purchases/gifts was so helpful. I know find scrolling so boring as I only follow 4 accounts

One thing that’s helped me is being really honest with myself on why I’m having issues in certain areas. For example door dash. I realized by Friday/Saturday I was feeling too tired/lazy to run to the grocery store for meat for dinner and to get fully dressed/made up to leave the house. I’ve started freezing meat or leftovers during the week or freezing leftover take out on Fridays (ex. pizza). This Friday I physically picked up sub sandwiches, but while I was out I got ingredients to make crockpot chili on Sat. Which I froze half of. I think I saved $100 just from that minimal effort. Also having the crockpot going on Sat meant I couldn’t leave the house to shop. I think it’s about planning ahead and setting yourself up for success before the trigger occurs

I’ve started putting categories in my savings for small luxuries that I want to purchase (like a really nice bathrobe from Restoration Hardware). Every week, I set aside $10 into that category. It’s a slow process but every week I get more and more excited that I’m getting close to buying it. It also accrues interest, since that money is in savings, and I know I can afford to set aside $10/week. Once I hit my target, I can either purchase that item, hold off on it, or move the money to a different category if I decide I want something else more. I’ve realized that I actually don’t mind waiting 20-30 weeks to buy something, and it gives me tons of time to change my mind while building the habit of consistently saving and being patient

I deleted Instagram, Facebook and TikTok and I can’t believe the 180 on my mental health and bank account since. It’s amazing. Social media is a virus honestly. I only use Reddit and YouTube now, and it’s been so great.

I love that no buy and low buy content is hitting the TikTok crowd, I hope it sticks around beyond the first 2 weeks for January though (when most people give up their New Year resolutions).

My best no buy tip- when I really really really want to buy something that I know I don't need, I take the price of the thing and put it in my house savings account instead. It reminds me of my goals and gets us a little closer to buying a home!

ADHD over consumer here- One of my tactics for not over buying in stores is to put the thing in my cart, wander around, think about it, give my brain time to think about what I might not be able to afford if I get this thing, what it’s like to spend a little time with this thing as “mine” as it is already in my cart, and more times than not I end up putting that thing back. I need a strategy for online shopping though 😂

For me, unsubbing creators that pushing shopping was like a weight lifted in a way and really considering the environmental impact as well as having a friend that works for the USPS have really helped me scale back on online ordering (nothing since early December). Since viewing your videos (in the last month or so) I haven’t even scrolled Amazon once (which in the past I would do almost daily). 🤦🏻‍♀️ December was a really “tight” month with Christmas and my partner’s financial instability currently so these videos really helped me stay aligned with goals and values that I may have lost touch with lately. I’ve basically been on an unoffical low buy since! ❤ thank you for vidmas, Shawna!

In my college class on addiction we had to give up something we felt we had an unhealthy relationship with for 30 days, write a letter to the habit, and do a daily journal. I gave up clothes shopping but that letter and journaling forced me to really examine my cycle of feeling bad>buying clothes >feeling guilty>buying more and repeat.

So my tip is to understand WHY you feel the need to over consume and come up with alternative coping mechanisms before you even attempt a no-buy or you’ll just hop back into the cycle

I went on my first No Buy in conjunction with getting really serious about finances, and I wasn't 100% successful, but it still taught me a lot & it trained me to reframe my desire. Now, about 4 years later & after continually watching anti-consumerism content like this, I'm actually internalizing everything. It takes a long time to change something so deeply ingrained in our society. Failing a No Buy year doesn't mean you actually failed. Accept that small bump, get up, and keep going!!

If scrolling is how you cope with anxiety, having a different physical activity could help. I knit and crochet, I listened to this video while winding a ball of yarn. It keeps my hands busy, and at the end there is the dopamine of having finished making something. I take projects with me everywhere and pull them out when I’m bored or socially overwhelmed.

Love your videos, but your audio is very inconsistent. While you are whispering into the mic, your video clips are super loud
