An iconic top of the range Ford Cortina Mk3 2000 GXL with 62,518 miles.

EQUIPMENT
All steel welded integral construction, safety glass all round, laminated windscreen, air extraction vents, vinyl roof, underriders, special black paint scheme on grille with GXL badge, applique panel at rear, automatic choke, windshield and rear window inserts, bright bumpers, bodyside rubbing strip, cigar lighter, push button radio, boot mat, two speed wipers, electric screen wash, electric clock. Centre console unit containing; ammeter and fuel, temperature and oil gauges. Factory options; Fabric trimmed seats, 185/70 R13 radial tyres, inertia reel front seat belts. Dealer options; Leather gear lever knob, sports steering wheel.

EXTERIOR
The instantly recognisable ‘coke bottle’ shape of the Mk3 Cortina is every inch a 1970’s icon and this example looks stunning in the original colour of Ermine White, (Code B). The paintwork looks fantastic with a uniform finish and all panels are in good condition with remedial work carefully undertaken to uphold the appearance. The original black vinyl roof is in superb order with no lifting and only a very small shallow ding to the nearside edge. The unique GXL badges and trim sections are factory fitment and all trim pieces are fully intact with only light tarnishing to some chrome sections around the rear lights. One of the rarest and most sought after of all Cortina’s, this range topping 2000 GXL presents very well indeed.

INTERIOR
The super stylish Mk3 Cortina interior features special extra padded GXL seats which in this example are trimmed in factory optional Black Fabric, (Code A1). The seats are in very good order with firm structure and only minimal wear. The upholstery is damage free aside from a slight thinning of the fabric to the driver’s seat upper bolster. Matching door cards with simulated wood veneer are fully intact as are the trim sections, handles and perforated headlining. The dashboard is completely free from cracks and houses fully functioning equipment and switchgear with exception of the non-functioning radio. The centre console houses the four extra gauges, unique to the GT models and range topping GXL model. Slight fading to the toggle switches is a minor observation to an otherwise brilliant 1970’s GXL interior.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Ford’s time tested and trustworthy 2000cc OHC ‘Pinto’ unit needs little introduction. With a power output of 112bhp, a top speed of 103mph and a 0-60 time of 10.2 seconds all allow the car to match the pace of modern traffic with ease. The engine is very quiet and smooth and performs just as it should. The engine bay is clean and displays the original chassis stamping to the inner wing as well as plates and labels which are factory fitted as opposed to the often-seen replacement aftermarket items. The four speed all synchromesh manual gearbox feels light with a positive clutch action and relaxed motoring is effortless.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Five styled sports road wheels have been refurbished and look great, and the chrome embellishers are mirror bright with only the lightest of markings. Four matching branded Falken Sincera in the factory size of 185/70 R13 have ample tread remaining. The hydraulic dual line brakes with servo assistance offer great stopping power and complete assurance.

HISTORY FILE
Supplied new by Ford Main Dealer, Swale Motors Ltd of Sittingbourne, and first registered on 19th April 1972, this early Mk3 Ford Cortina has covered just 62,518 miles from new with only three former keepers in total. Mr Tobin, the last owner of 13 years wanted to find the most original example possible and set about improving the car to attend shows and enjoy recreational outings. The original Ford Sure wallet houses all handbooks and dealership literature including the guarantee cards and the original service book. There is a file of invoices and previous MOT certificates and two seats of keys and aerial keys too. There is even a genuine Ford Cortina range brochure from 1972!

Now hugely desirable thanks in part to the cult television series, Life on Mars, the Mk3 Cortina GXL presented here is perfect for the next budding ‘Gene Hunt’ wanting a useable and great looking classic guaranteed to draw much admiration.

MOT November 2020, HPI Clear.

I still think this is the best looking Cortina by far with the four headlamp set up and the vinyl roof. Chap in our street had a metallic purple 2000E, dad on the other hand was very loyal to BMC or BL as it was by then so he had a Marina 1.8 HL. Never thought they looked as good with the rectangular headlamps, I know all manufacturers did it back then but can you imagine modern manufacturers having different headlamp set ups and sometimes completely different front ends depending on what trim level you ordered.

A gorgeous looking car. All Cortina's are great but stylistically the MK 3''s my favourite. I had a bright orange one back in the day.

Brings back memories of my dad's Mark 3 GXL 2000 in yellow back in the early 70's. I still remember the licence plate number, LLR 353K. It was such a cool looking car. 😎

Lovely stock wheels and steering wheel, and it seems like no door droop. Vinyl always suits this car best. The Coke Bottle was the best of the Cortinas, I reckon. The more of these you find in good nick, the merrier.

The vinyl roof really takes the white from plain to smart looking, GXL trim doesn't hurt either. Great offering. 👍👍

One of the best looking Fords ever designed! Back in the day these were as common as Starlings on our roads. Super rare now. This one looks fabulous and in Arctic or is that Ermine White? with the black vinyl roof highly desirable! That classic Coke bottle styling never dates, I notice too the classic bouncy Rev counter needle! Id kill to own this car!!

Out of all the Cortinas the mk3 has to be my favorite. The interiors are just so of that time, you could tell the stylists back then must have had a lot of joy designing these cars.

Had a gold 2000E once with a leaky sunroof. Wolfrace wheels. Loved that thing even when the roof leaked 🙂

My mum and dad apparently had one just like this some time before I was born. I do vaguely remember the mark 3 estate that replaced it which was a 1974 1600 or 2000 XL in bright red with RoStyle wheels. I sat in the hard plastic child seat in the middle of rear seat. They were Ford loyalists in the 1970s to the mid 1980s.
