He made Horowitz quit for a week. What a legend.

Art Tatum was a blind, self-taught pianist.

That should tell how fucking terrifying he was.

i think tatum was the greatest pianist ever but those comments have to be hearsay because theyre attributed to Godowsky, Horowitz, Stokowski and Rachmaninoff, but I looked and was unable to dig up any mention of tatum from the mouth or pen of those people

A genius with a vast amount of knowledge - he lived through jazz's inner conflict ("To Dance or To Listen?"). He could read music, though partially sighted, and had an excellent ear. Never underestimate a jazz musician's thirst for theoretical knowledge - countless undertook classical tuition, played in churches and actively seeked reputable teachers to nurture their art. Besides folk/world and (baroque) concerto settings at that time, where else would one improvise? Some improvisations are better than others, but that's subjective and opens up enriching discussion.

Tatum's album with Ben Webster is phenomenal - complimentary to one another, good rhythm, beautiful touch. Late in his career, but evidence that he found the best way to adapt to a trio context (which is a challenge for anyone that starts as a soloist, particularly from his generation of players).

Tatum is out of this world, way ahead of his time

“No classical pianist could do that”, well, I guess I just have to prove you wrong

The great Oscar Peterson after listening to Art Tatum, thought about giving up on playing the piano 🎹.

Story of Horowitz in nightclub, in back row area, listening to Willie “the Lion” Smith. Manager offered to get Horowitz closer to stage.. to which Horowitz pointed to his head and said, “it’s ok, I see it right here”. The greats understand each other. Would love to get reactions of some greats to the energetic firecracker Hiromi.🍻

Someone once told me I sounded like Tatum. I said Art. He said no, O'Neal!

Rach was too humble, but he still is the greatest of all.

"If this man decided to play classical music, then we're all in trouble."
Rachmananov

RACH MAN WAS INTIMIDATED af😅😅😅

That phrase was said by Horowitz, not Rach.

Still, I'd like to know how Tatum would have responded to a performance of Marc-André Hamelin's 'Circus Galop', Conlon Nancarrow's 'Study for Player Piano' and similar unplayable compositions. I'd hope he'd laugh....

Это была шутка. Время показало ценность творчества

He's God, Oscar Peterson is the Holy Spirit and Kieth Jarrett is Jesus 😽

Plus, Art isn’t playing from sheet music

Most perhaps, it's not that he didn't "decide to" play classical, but that he couldn't. Tatum was not meant to play classical and likely couldn't do so, albeit his ability to perform magic on the piano with his preferred genre.

Andre Previn tells a story where Horowitz asked Tatum to come and hear his amazingly virtuosic variations he had written out on the tune Tea For Two.
Tatum said amazing very hard. Would you like me to play Tea For Two and he played and played until Horowitz just stopped him and said when did you write these and Tatum said just now…
