Thank you for publishing these videos. I have survived three sets of pulmonary embolisms in a ten year period. My lungs are scarred now so I am frequently out of breath. It was one of your videos that made me realize that I was only breathing with my upper chest. I am starting to sing at 54 years old using your tutorials just to change my breathing, expanding my lungs and having fun while doing it. So thank you!

I think my breath support has gotten stronger, since I started watching your vids. Less tension and my throat feels more free, though my idea of what exactly support is remains shaky. One thing that boggles me is how exactly do you increase support? I know it should change as you go up in range and when you want to belt, but how is that accomplished? Apologies if this comment is too long.

Also I bought your program about a month ago and love it.

Hi, your videos are great. I love singing but I've been on a 'singers-block' for so long that I don't know if I can ever become a good singer again (I used to sing well when I was a kid). Looking back I may have been misguided by some of my vocal coaches and singing teachers. One of them told me to do push-ups while singing to reach high notes hahah (I don't think it worked out well). As someone who has had some vocal training, I can tell that you're really helping people (unlike some other youtubers..) and you know what you're talking about! I wish I could be your student!

Hello Victoria, hopefully, you'll read my comment and help me :
I've taken vocal lessons with many teachers and coaches for many years, and I've watched many videos about breath support, including the video you mentioned you made.
One thing that still isn't clear for me is how you should apply breath support to a whole musical phrase.
When we sing, the air has to consistently go out of the lungs through the vocal folds to make an even note. So it's like being powered by a balloon that slowly deflates. So, the less air we have left in the lungs, the less pressure we naturally have, right?
On the other hand, my coach explained to me that the higher you sing, the more sub-glottic pressure you must apply.

Now, let's imagine that you have to sing a phrase starting with middle range notes, and then halfway through the sentence you have to sing one high and powerful high note and then going back to the middle range. what should the belly do? Going inward consistently? resisting with the pelvic muscle consistently? Gently going inward on the middle notes then resisting only on the high note and then going inward again?

My coach also explained to me the difference between the pressure (sostenuto), where the belly goes inward and the counter-pressure (appoggio) where you keep the inhale gesture with the belly going outward. He told me that gentle low/middle notes can be done with pressure and that I needed counter-pressure for powerful high notes.
But these two things seem completely antagonist to me. How can you possibly switch from pressure to counter pressure in the same sentence?
Please help me, I'm lost.

I've taken voice lessons before and been in choir under highly trained directors but never been told to breathe or sing using my pelvic floor before. Maybe this would help with my chronic asthma

I have a question about timbre. As I understand it, support, good cord closure, careful vowels and resonance (in the mask?) are meant to produce a good tone. I mean one that is clear and has no scratches, or unpleasant adventitious noise. But what about timbre? Famous singers may sometimes sing badly but it’s still their voice and almost always easily recognizable. Can you change or modify timbre a bit? Entertainers sometimes do vocal imitations of singers and regardless of how well they sound like the singer, they don’t sound like themselves. Is there any room for some modification of timbre in classical or broadway style singing? Jonas Kaufmann immediately comes to mind.

Really enjoyed your first video I watched! Very helpful, found it a bit difficult listening to the very same introduction at the start of this one. Perhaps you will retain a bigger audience if you let your beautiful talent do the speaking for you, with respect to your credits.

But who am I, Perhaps I’m completely incorrect. One thing I’m not is a hater though, I love your tips so far and will likely watch many more. Thanks V. (;
