Hey Jonathan I just got the 2.4GHz base 15 inch Macbook pro. It's an amazing machine and it's really fast. I'm using the computer for internet browsing, youtube, video streaming, storing music, converting DVDs to mp4, and soon will be doing some video editing. I just realize that I should've went for the i7 because even though I'm not a gamer, but simply because I intend to keep the Macbook Pro for a very long time and I want the best, lol.

i love how he says the i7 is slightly faster about 5 seconds before the i5 even boots up...

I have a 13 inch MBP i7. People always complain about the cost of macs, but honestly what I did is put it on a credit card (with no interest) and paid a bit off a tiny bit each month. It's the best way for a student to be able to afford a mac, if you're responsible. I use my mac for internet, word processing and graphic design- it's AWESOME!

No i didn't do anything. The techs were hired to install entire system. This all happened at a very high end pro recording studio. After much money and wasted time, Macs were just the way to go. We consulted several major recording studios and they all recommended Macs for Audio or Video editing over Windows. I'm not saying all Windows computers are junk. But for pro audio apps, Macs perform better.

Would love to see more comparison besides just start up time. Pop a 7200 rpm drive or a SSD in the i5 and you would probably win over the i7 in this dept... What I really would like to see is performance tests of the fastest i5 processor against the entry level i7 running applications.

Finally, a great comparison video between core i5 and i7:) I think i'm getting a macbook this weekend (First mac super excited)! I can barely afford the i7 as it is but I want to customize it a bit. I've been searching on the internet and can't really find any info between 7200rpm the 5400rpm. Can you explain the difference? And Is the 7200 worth the fifty bucks? Also is high resolution display worth it? Thanks:)

@rfsent5 Fast forward a few years from now: "The hilarious thing is my Mac is still running rock solid, while you'll have a hard time selling your virus-plagued PC on eBay for more than $100".

The idea of doing comparisons is very very good, but you should compare products with the same amount of apps, so it's a fair comparison, I think you should work on fairer comparisons.
Good job anyways

@LordWhorfinX2 That is very true (Generally speaking. iMovie, Garageband and all that is not available for Windows), but obviously they (The editing software) are very good, or people wouldn't be hyping over it. So what if it''s not the OS. You need software to run on your OS. I gave an example. Part of what makes an OS good is the amount and quality of the software you can run on it.

Typically larger drives have a higher density and thus read/write faster. Because you used a 500GB for the i7... that probably had an effect on this test. Not to mention even drives of the same capacity very in speed from manufacture. For instance, my 320GB Samsung Spinpoint F4 reads 40-50MB/s faster than a 320GB WD Caviar Blue since it is single platter hand has a higher density. Top it off with a Higher clocked CPU which has HT and it's really clear which one should win :P

@FullArsenalTV

The HP Envy notebooks have serious over heating issues. Trust me, I use to own a 17" version with the Quad Core i7 mobiles.

After a few hours of rendering video with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, the GPU and CPU would make the chassis so hot that the computer would shut itself down.

I returned it after a week and purchased the 17" MBP and have had no such problems.

If you are good in technical things you could even replace almost every fucking Part of a MacBook (Speakers, Bezel, Display, etc.). If you do this you will discover that the almost every component of a MacBook, especially the Logicboard is made with a precision and love to the detail that you will not find in any windows Laptop (except Sony Vaio). Please don't say that fixing issues is impossible only because YOU can't do it.

This guy pushed the button on the i7 slightly before the i5. The startup chime and boot screen have a standard time window, and you can see the i7 show the startup screen first. That doesn't mean it is faster. It means it was turned on slightly before the i5 was turned on.

@QualityCompare My 13 inch SSD is faster than the 2 that he compared. They are regular hdd. After timing mine, it booted in 15 seconds, which is faster than what these two that he tested did. I have no idea how was a 15 inch SSD is, probably faster than mine. Dunno, but mine definitely is faster than these 2.

@iEatUglyNoobs I ran Ubuntu Linux for 2 years prior to getting Macs, I must say that is one stellar OS as well. I also run Ubuntu off Parallels currently as well as Win 7 x64. I switched to Macs primarily because I wanted a All-in-One that was spec'd well and just worked like a charm. Sometimes the essential components wont work in a Linux install, and I wasn't about to go back to windows. I got an iMac and a Macbook Pro 15" i7 core and upgraded them both to 8GB of Ram and never looked back.

that wasn't fair because the i5 had to load the task bar full of icons at the bottom of the screen....

I'm sure your windows machine is nice, but it is definitely more prone to virus issues, and doesn't come close to lasting as long. I bought an my mac back in 2002 and it still runs great. Still running current software great. I've owned several macs and never had one issue with any of them. I've also owned several window machines and had problems with everyone of them, especially when recording audio or video (which i do for a living). Macs are also easier and more intuitive to navigate imo.
