I hope they do make citizenship available again through military service. I think honorably completing US military service is one of the best evidence of someone's character.

Reading all those comments I feel so priveleged to having a US citizenship. Being born abroad I don't picture going through what people without it have to. All the best for you all trying to join as foreign nationals, good luck.

My dad was born in West Germany in 68’, he immigrated to America with his family in 76’, but could only get a green card even though he taught himself English without any help. He couldn’t afford college and needed full citizenship, and was also an All California Track Star. He joined the US Army in 86’ and went to Airborne School and passed. He also passed Pre-Ranger and did Ranger School twice but did not graduate. He was promoted from private to seargent in 3 years. He was deployed in the middle east (I don’t exactly where) and the US invasion of Panama to capture Emmanuel Noriega (pineapple face). After he saw he saw in Panama he didn’t wanna go back. He didn’t sign the reinlistment contract even tho he would’ve been automatically promoted to E-6. Came back, went to college, became a chemical engineer, and he’s worked at Chevron for 31 years as of now.

My dad also was injured in jump school on his L5 vertabrae so he filed a claim with the VA a couple of years ago and as of a few days ago, he is considered a partially disabled Vet. This is good news as it will pay for any public college in CA and maybe even some out of state schools I’m also graduating this year.

Thankyou for your service dad, Seargent in the 82nd Airborne with 5 combat jumps.

I got here in the US (Cali to be specific) via Green Card last June 2019. Initiated recruitment in August, went to MEPS, got my MOS and contract, then sworn the same day on the 9th of September. After a few weeks, got interviewd for background check. I got shipped out to Fort Jackson last November 5th, graduated from AIT last April 28th. *Insert Covid-19 and all implied craziness* PCSing to Fort Irwin NLT August 20. Four of my LPR battle buddies experienced the same ease in joining the US Army. One got here only a few months before me, the others 2 to 4 years. Downside is that, no security clearance can be granted to LPR, and therefore limited options for your MOS regardless of ASVAB/PICAT score. Ideally, we can start processing our application for citizenship when we're six months in our first duty station. But we're not in a rush, so... 😁

The puzzling part of the background check is the following: assuming you can apply for citizenship, the process takes around 5 months to complete but afterwards you can join the military with no problem; while in the other hand, if you try to join the military without citizenship your background check plus the naturalization process could either be 6 months or a whole year.
Wouldn't it make more sense to apply for citizenship first, then join the military or apply for citizenship as you try to enlist.
