As someone who graduated at 17 I actually keep getting remarks about it, cause it's considered way more odd

For all my non-Germans in the comments:

In Germany it really depends on which kind of "highschool" you go to, there is three main types that either go up to tenth grade (Hauptschule, Realschule) or to 12th/13th grade (Gymnasium).

Gymnasium is what will typically give you the best chances for an academical career after school, which is why it is the most common system.
Now doing the math, most children will start school at six years old and finish at 18, soon 19 since they added a year for the younger students.

Ofc some finish earlier (my sister for example graduated shortly after turning 17), some take a bit longer (I think the oldest people in my grade were around 21).
It varies slightly, but most people who visit the Gymnasium will be done at 18.
Everyone is required to go to school until at least grade 10 tho.

As a 20 y/o who graduated H.S at 18 but will actually go to university next year when I'll turn 21, because of VARIOUS reasons (covid taking up my most crucial school years, parental pressure, wrong career choices and judgement etc) i felt soo old and like i had failed in life. I feel better that there's countries and people around the world where joining university/college 2-3 years later is not looked down upon. I mean I have not really ruined my life, YET.
