J. P. McCarthy interviews Dr. J. Allen Hynek about U.F.O.'s

This is an interview from circa 1977 with Dr. J. Allen Hynek. It is conducted by Detroit radio legend J.P. McCarthy of WJR 760 AM. J.P. had Dr. Hynek on for the whole morning, 6-10 AM and I managed to get most of the interview segments. Might have missed a few here and there. I've treasured this recording all these years because this interview came at a time when I was at the peak of my fascination with the U.F.O. phenomenon. I, like Fox Mulder, wanted to believe everything (well almost) I read and heard. I even had a sighting myself although it would only be classified as a daylight disc. Most probably, it was a weather balloon but it was perfectly round with no features and brownish-orange in color. Saw it on a very windy day back when I was a kid still flying kites. Enjoy!

Thank you for sharing this interview. It is a rich piece of history, and my admiration of Hynek comes from his book, Night Siege, on the Hudson Valley flap in the early to mid-1980s, which I have studied in the field.

The guest has an upbeat radio persona, and keeps the host’s commentary from wandering. I’m enjoying The Hynek UFO Report on audiobook. Debunkers like to discredit the professor by citing his life long interest in mysticism. I believe it helps explain his professional curiosity about what remains unknown about the universe, and an apparent sympathy for those with experiences outside the realm of accepted science. Hynek died in 1986.
