Love this. I think the protein obsession largely comes from the US.
Growing up in Western Europe, I never looked at food as carbs, fats and proteins. It was just food, food that was consumed for nutrition and sustenance and pleasure
Living in the US for 12 yrs really did a number on my relationship with food (and I love the US) and it took me a long time to heal from it and return to my European roots of thinking around food.
And I get furious when I see nutritionists in the US peddle the protein or carnivore or paleo or other theories and diets instead of just good wholesome healthy eating; case in point one American nutritionist with a huge following who launched her protein supplement range recently that it so overpriced and sold for USD 65 for a small 20 oz bag and also so unnecessary that it makes me cringe.
Can only say it again - thank you for your voice, your messages, your work - so so important and very valuable.

Nobody really talks about the long term effects of protein powders. I’ve been lifting weights for almost 20 years, and relied on protein supplements. After a few years, your body will not be able to digest those powders. I’d say 90% of people I know who have lifted for a long time, stop using whey protein as it causes gas, bloating, and I’ve seen women develop colitis and very painful side effects from over using whey. If the food you eat causes you to walk around constantly passing gas and feeling fatigued, your body is probably hinting you should change something

I would highly encourage you to study amino acids and their role in the body. This is essentially why people are "obsessed" with protein. Muscle is composed of amino acids, and muscle is the organ of longevity. The more muscle you have, the healthier your body composition is and the less prone you will be to disease.

I have been wondering if maybe the modern obsession with protein may have something to do with the poor gut health of most Americans due to consuming processed foods and pesticides. Maybe because people can’t actually fully absorb what they’re eating, they need to eat more of it? I think that actual healing lies in healing your gut so you can fully utilize the whole foods you’re eating.
I love feeding my kids, husband and myself healthy, wholesome homemade foods. I don’t pay too much attention to macros. We eat a balanced diet.

Dr. Peter Attia talks a lot about why protein is so important especially as we age bc muscle loss is very detrimental. He cites a lot of research in his book. I think there is a lot of fixation on protein because it is the one that is most difficult to meet the requirements that the research suggest is optimal for maintaining muscle while carbs and fat are a lot easier to consume because we enjoy consuming them more. Therefore, people obsess over protein and how to get enough of it without overeating.

Happy you made this video...I've been thinking about this for a few years now; the protein obsession has gotten really out of hand now. America is spreading this to the rest of the world yet blue zones with healthiest people of healthy body weight are eating little protein in comparison to what's recommended by modern american fitness/health gurus.

Thank you for this video Lucie!

I was recommended by a health coach to eat 160-180 grams of protein (when I weighed 160 lbs / 72kg) and I found it impossible and unnatural. I was consuming so much cheese, protein powders, processed meats. It felt terrible to me even though it did work in terms of losing a few lbs. I was obsessed with tracking my macros and mentally obsessed with food.

Your videos have been so helpful to me to reframe and listen to myself. Now eating more plant based with some animal protein once a day (most of which we raise ourselves) and I feel so much better internally and mentally.

Very good topic! Everyone is so obsessed with protein, as if it’s the only healthy macronutrient...

What are your thoughts about the collagen push - supplements/powders - and how do you approach that as a vegetarian?

What bothers me is how it’s all skewed towards protein and weight training and away from endurance sports or just sports/team games in general and carbs. Can’t we have both? We’d be sunk without a cardiovascular system and carbs are just as essential as protein.

I agree with you so much. Thank you to speak about this topic. I haven't never understood this protein obsession😅. Too much is just too much.

I felt the same way about protein until I found Stacy Sims. Check out her interview with Andrew Hubberman. She’s an expert in women’s health and nutrition. It was really eye opening! But yes, those prone to fixation and disordered eating can get obsessed with anything related to diet. And the food and fitness industries are absolutely taking advantage. Example: protein enhanced Pop Tarts.

I think the only people 'obsessed' (too strong of a word really) with protein, are the people 'obsessed' with health and fitness. Why people make that out to be a bad thing is a bit confusing to me! The only people who think protein is less important are vegans, which to me, is a bit of a fad if you aren't doing it solely for cattle welfare reasons (note I said cattle, not "animals".).

Lucie! One more question…
Did you mother use retinoid creams ?
