Michigan French Drain Laughs at 4-Inch Rainstorm: Your Blueprint for Hurricane-Proof Drainage (Even in Florida!)

Is your yard turning into a lake every time it rains? Do you live in an area prone to heavy downpours or even hurricanes? If so, this video is a must-watch! We're showcasing a real-life example of a Michigan backyard transformed by a powerful, open French drain and sump pump system that not only survived a 4-inch rainstorm but would also stand strong against a hurricane.

The Challenge: A Flat, Flood-Prone Yard

This Michigan property faced a common issue: a flat backyard with no natural slope for water to drain. Coupled with a walkout basement design, the yard became a waterlogged mess after even moderate rainfall. The homeowner had tried various DIY solutions, including adding more dirt, which only worsened the problem. It was clear that a professional drainage solution was needed.

The Solution: A Hurricane-Ready French Drain System

Enter French Drain Man, armed with decades of experience and a passion for solving drainage problems. Our team designed and installed an open French drain system with a high-capacity sump pump, incorporating key features to ensure optimal performance and longevity:

Open French Drain: This design maximizes surface water absorption, acting like a giant channel drain to quickly collect and redirect water away from the house.

Laser-Precise Slope: We used a laser transit to ensure a consistent slope in the trench, guaranteeing efficient water flow to the sump pump.

High-Capacity Sump Pump: A powerful sump pump with added chamber capacity was installed to quickly remove collected water, even during intense rainfall events.

Erosion Control Measures: Riprap and cobblestone were strategically placed to prevent erosion around the drain and discharge areas.

Critter Guards: To protect the system from clogs and damage, critter guards were installed to prevent rodents from nesting in the pipes.

Quality Materials: We used only high-quality, durable materials, including 4-inch corrugated pipe for the discharge line and large-diameter round rock for optimal drainage.

The Result: A Dry, Beautiful Yard

After a few months and several heavy rainstorms, including a 4-inch deluge, the French drain system proved its worth. The yard remained dry and functional, even during extreme weather conditions. The homeowner was thrilled with the results, stating that the system worked flawlessly and had completely transformed their outdoor space.

Florida Homeowners, Take Note!

This Michigan-built drainage system isn't just for northern climates. It's designed with principles that would easily withstand the torrential rains and hurricanes common in Florida. If you're a Florida homeowner or contractor, take note of the key features of this system:

Multiple Drain Lines: Two French drains were installed to maximize water collection around the house and patio.

Large-Capacity Sump Pump: A powerful pump ensures quick and efficient water removal during heavy rain.

Erosion Control: Protecting the system with riprap and cobblestone is crucial in areas prone to heavy runoff.

High-Quality Materials: Using durable materials and proper installation techniques ensures the system can withstand extreme weather conditions.

There is NO BETTER SYSTEM... Period!! Just days after installing my 3 pack ( 2 slotted and one solid) + Micro Bad Seed/open french drain, it down poured for 30 min flooding half the town. It was a generational type down pour. The system got overwhelmed (as did the city's system so..) But the moment the rain slowed... ALL the water was gone in about 10 mins. This would normally take DAYS, and we have Robert to thank. This system literally saved our business.

I remember this install! Great job and cool to see it working in the rain. Just shook my head at the DIY electrical by the Spend all of that money for a pro install ($10-15K ?), a top notch brick house and dude runs his own janky electrical cord....lol. Come on man.

I think I needed this video this morning. Had some washout on my steep gravel driveway in Vermont. I used some of your materials on my basin catch parts. Homemade. I need more diverters that I made use of that I saw on a forest road with a rubber dam that sticks up from a 2x4 wood channel

Wow ! Still don't quite understand how an outdoor sump pump system will work during winter season when everything is frozen rock solid... I heard you mentioned a 'heater' to the owner ? Thx.

Looks great 👍 but what if you have a propane tank against your house? Does the French drain go all the way around the house?

I wonder how you would keep the Bermuda from taking over the stone without using chemicals. Bermuda is everywhere in Oklahoma.

What type of border is that between the stone and sod?

I live in Ohio & had a storm that dumped over 3.5" of rain in under an hour & another 2" over the next three! Will your system "laugh at that"? 4" corrugated downspout above ground extensions were "maxed out, " & below ground systems in the neighborhood had "water geysers" from the downspouts!
