Supporting actor has nothing to do with whether or not a character ACTUALLY supports the other in the narrative - it's just the actor who plays the B role in the 3 acts. A villain / antagonist can be supporting role because their actions move the main character arc.

Well since his methods led Andrew to devote himself entirely to music and reach his peak, he DID support the main actor.

Its supporting in an unsupporting way. To push someone past there limits in jazz, to show them their true potential, you have to make them think that the best they can do is the worst, which pushes them to doing the best there is if that makes sense. In other words its supporting, in an invisible way.
