How To Tailor A Blazer YOURSELF (TRY THIS)

Got a blazer that you want to fit you better, but you don't want to pay a tailor? Yeah, let's make it happen! It's beginner friendly, and best of all, I don't like long intros, so let's do this.

Lay your jacket down, smooth it out, and let's talk about our plan of attack. It's these two side seams right here that we're gonna alter. And if you want to alter the center seam as well, you can, but there's no need on this jacket because it fits the middle of my back just fine. Some jackets have multiple additional seams on the side and front, but altering these is unnecessary. But if you want to, go right ahead.

Let's flip our jacket inside out. If there was lining, just cut a hole in the bottom, flip your jacket through that hole, and handle your business. Easy peasy. Grab this side seam first and flip it on its side. We're going to put a double-sided tapered straight stitch on the seam, meaning it will gradually go in and then out.

We'll put two sewing pins 4 inches from the edge of our seams. The space between those two pins is 9 inches, with the widest part of my dart right in the middle at 5 1/2 inches. For a nice gradual taper, place the bottom pin at a quarter of an inch, the middle pin at 1 inch, and the top pin at a quarter of an inch again. Repeat for the other side seam.

These are our pinned-up side seams. If yours look like mine, perfect. The vertical green pin at the bottom is where we'll start our stitch. Follow along that gradual taper. If you've never used a sewing machine before, don't panic. It's just a straight stitch.

Set your straight stitch at 2.5 millimeters in length. Line up your machine under that first vertical pin and go slow. Here's the inside of our jacket with a nice gradual taper. I used contrasting thread so you could see what I'm doing.

No need to cut anything. This is the outside, and no one will know you just spent 20 minutes doing this yourself!

Just wanted to tell you that your videos helped me out in a crunch. Bought a Jack Skellington Halloween costume last minute for my son which you can’t try on beforehand. He put it on at home and it was ridiculously huge. I had received a sewing machine for Christmas but hadn’t used it until now. With your tutorials and positive spin I was able to make the costume wearable and it actually looks good. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!

So today I curiously decided to look up tailoring a shirt on YouTube. Got a bunch of channels. This channel my 2nd watch. But I’ve had the swimming in my shirt issue and wondered how it’s fixed. Low and behold finding this channel eating dinner, I’m completely dumbfounded at how some sewing and stitching skills can fix things. So mesmerizing I realize I’m down the rabbit hole watching more than half a dozen videos one after the other, because I had no friggin idea this was even a thing. Subbed!

Bro - much love for the tutorials! I am ordering some of your merchandise to support you. I started watching during the pandemic with nothing to do. And as one of your videos said - I altered about 7 shirts in one sitting. Then when I ran out of things to alter I started altering my wife clothes. My sons clothes. The dogs jacket ... Now they hide their clothes from me ..LOL I am a diagnosed Sewsciopath ... Maybe you could start a help group ..LOL Much love my friend and happy holidays to you and yours!

Have you done a video on tailoring blazer sleeves? I couldn’t find one and would love to see it. Know it’s not a total beginner one tho.

Just gonna be sitting here waiting and hoping for a sleeve hemming tutorial, it seems so threatening with the lining and the buttons and all that.

SD, could you explain what you meant by cut a hole and turn the blazer inside out through the lining?

Would this or could this also be applied to a peacoat?

Stylish D, do you have any videos explaining how to alter shirts for a man with a slight belly 🤰. I would like to tailor some of my husband’s clothes but I need to know how to get over the hump. 😂

Get a piece of clear plastic or acrylic from lowes… Lay it over your pinned layout, and draw your intent-to-sew line on the acrylic with a dry-erase marker.

Use that acrylic to transfer the shape to a piece of cardboard.

Then, use the cardboard as a stencil. This way, by flipping over your stencil, you can have the exact same curve/angle/location on both sides, perfectly symmetrical.
