2022 Subaru WRX Long Term Review - Best Car I've Owned

This is my personal 2022 Subaru WRX in the premium trim. I normally review a wide variety of tech on this channel, but this year first Christmas Special, I am reviewing my car. I discuss the price for a new and used WRX compared to other cars like the Toyota GR Corolla, Mazda 3 AWD Turbo, Honda Civic SI, Honda Civic Type R, Hyundai Elantra N, Volkswagen GTI, and Volkswagen Golf R. I talk about the overall driving experience, fuel economy, interior, tech, and sound quality from the speakers, and overall reliability and ownership costs over the 30,000 miles I have owned the vehicle. I can say, without a doubt, this is the best vehicle I have owned and can completely recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, safe, AWD vehicle for a competitive price.

Thanks for watching, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays and subscribe for more 😎

I just bought this car and now my wife won’t sleep with me. Thoughts?

Just bought a 2024 wrx for 30k… people complain about the price but it’s still the cheapest most reliable sports car that’s AWD!

One thing about this latest gen WRX that gets overlooked is how good it is for heel and toe braking. Not just the pedal spacing, but how easily the engine zings up 1000 rpms when you stab the throttle with the right side of your foot while braking before a corner. Heel and toe is a super fun hobby you can practice and get better at every time you drive, and it's extremely rewarding. Some find manuals a chore, others find them super engaging and fun in the right vehicle like this one. The car also doesn't get enough credit for how much of a death grip it has on the road, even with the stock Dunops. Everyone bemoans the lack of steering feel, and I agree. But the first time I cut the wheel like a maniac at a left turn in an attempt to get some slide action, the thing just stayed planted and flat and did not break free, didn’t even chirp a tire. I was astonished.

I"ve owned 27 cars in my life. My previous two favorites were my 96 Integra GS-R, and my 2003 Jetta 1.8T GLS. When we had kids and moved to NW PA, I had to get an SUV to shuttle them around. Years of dreadful SUVs. Now they are mostly all of driving age, so I picked up the '23 WRX Premium with the moonroof and HK stereo. Drunkman E30 tune, AWE Touring exhaust, ETS intake and some cosmetic do-dads and the car is just an absolute joy to drive. You laugh every time you drive it.

Someone will always have a faster car than you. I don't care about numbers, I drive for me and my fun, not to get in street races. This car is a blast on the roads, dirt roads, snow, whatever you throw at it.

I went from a 99 Miata to a 2022 WRX Premium specced basically exactly like yours, I've only had it for 2 months. It was an R title I found with only 6, 500 miles on it for $24k; basically a new car. It was salvaged because it was rear-ended and went over a curb during the parts shortage, so the insurance company decided to ditch it. Fortunately, all it needed was a new rear bumper and the rear trunk straightened out, and it was practically brand-new (that price was part of the $24k). I've never owned such a nice vehicle, I agree that I love how spartan the tech is. The manual isn't as snappy as the miata's, but it's definitely fun.
I already put an ETS intake on it and did a tune XD it's a marvelous car, I appreciate your down-to-earth review.

I have a '22 Premium and agree with a lot of your points. I don't drive it daily- just when I want to drive a manual.
I also dislike the screen. If rather have buttons, switches and guages. The base stereo is horrible so I replaced all 6 speakers and now it acceptable.
The car is easy to work on and fun to drive. Affordable. The '22 is pretty low tech. No Eyesite or other electronic nannys like the '24s+ have.

8:50 100% agree! I love driving, and greatly prefer the more raw feel of driving. Plus, my base model weighs over 240lbs less than the fully optioned model. That’s huge.

I use 87 octane in mine. 50k miles, no issues. It has an ERM in it to modulate ignition. It's fine as long as you aren't hammering a cold engine.

I hate the huge touch panel center, so the analog speedometer/tach is a major plus. It's like a consolation prize. I'm glad that a gadget reviewer like you realizes that not everything has to be an iPad.

Good vid thanks. I have 23 Premium. Like it more than 13 Limited WRX & 15 Mustang GT that I had. Must have mods are upgraded brake pads (EBC Red), exhaust (I got Revel (Tanebe) Medallion), tinted windows, & oil catch can. Also good: Speaker upgrades, JBL BassPro Nano subwoofer (behind seat), & 20mm wheel spacers. Shifter is easily improved w/ a few parts (shifter stop/guide, STI pitch stop & transmission mount, trans cross member and rear diff bushings). Mine is also protuned, but I’m older and have money to take that risk.

Looove my manual 2022 WRX! On paper, the improvements seem minor until you dig into the details. The engineering on the new engine is brilliant. The wider power band lets you dig into the throttle 700-800 rpm earlier than the previous generation, which is so much fun. And there’s no rev hang now, which was really annoying in 2021 and earlier WRX’s. Also, the stock 2022’s drivetrain is so efficient that they get nearly identical hp at the wheels as the 2020 STI. There are tons of videos of the VB WRX keeping up with STI’s in the QM. It’s an amazing car.

Plus, a Cobb OTS tune (no hardware added, just software tweaks) can add up to 50hp and 100+ tq *at the wheels*. Insane!

Just reached 24k on my 2022 and this car has been impressive. I was going to get into a new civic si but they were slim at the time so I thought I'd test drive a new WRX while I wait and it just won me over. I test drove a couple 2018 wrx's back then and didn't like them as much but this new gen is a good improvement. Really hoping Subaru makes this car as long as possible.
