When Old Great Bulgaria fell apart, the Bulgarians split along the Danube and the Volga. The Danubian Bulgarians were the first to accept Christianity and preserve their ancient customs and traditions, invent and christen the "Cyrillic" and spread it among the Slavs. The Volga Bulgarians, who were one of the first to accept Islam, spread Islam among the Turks and gave them a second Bulgarian alphabet. The first Slavic language was Bulgarian. The first Turkish language is Bulgarian.

I think that another interesting fact about Bulgaria is that its people (Bulgarians) haven't always been south Slavic, in fact I think they were firstly Turks but I am not sure. Anyways, as he said after the Bulgarian State in modern day Ukraine ceased to exist Bulgarians emigrated to Eastern Balkans where they mixed with the majority Slavic population. Eventually they would adopt south Slavic language and culture.

This video is confusing Bulgars and Bulgarians. The Bulgars were Turkic, while the Bulgarians are Slavic.

Present day Bulgaria was Slavic speaking when it was conquered by the Bulgars. The Bulgar ruling class assimilated and became Slavs, but most of today's Bulgarians have little Turkic blood.
