I'd been living down South for a number of years & understood everyone just fine. Or so I thought!
I started working with someone who had what I call a "Country Accent"!! She talks fast & has a cute voice with a drawl. It sounded like birds chirping!! I had to ask her to repeat herself 3 times & I STILL couldn't understand what she was saying!!! After that I just started shaking my head & walking away. It took a while but, I FINALLY managed to understand her.

I'm an English major in Texas, and I feel this so hard. But ain't is a perfectly acceptable contraction of "is not." Just make sure you put the apostrophe after the Y in y'all!

I still catch myself saying “a wolla go” when trying to say “a while ago”. I’ve lived up north for 7 years now, and I still can’t stop with this one lol 😂

Moved south from NY as a kid in the 70's. Got sent home with a letter telling my parents I needed speech therapy for my "speech impediment "!! Lol.

This is why I love the southern accent. It makes it so much more fun to speak a language that itself refuses to follow any of the rules it pretends it even has. "Idn't it" is a phrase I use off & on in a very specific way/mood.

I very clearly remember asking my grandmother what the difference was between "can't" and "cain't". I thought there must be circumstance in which one was correct, and other circumstances in which the other was correct.

I was right. I depends who you're talking with / with whom you are talking.

Raised by grandparents from Pennsylvania that moved to texas. Water is "Wader", everything is "fixin' to" and washer is "worsher". I have no complaints or regrets.
