Focus groups have been widely used by organizations and individuals to find out how their products and ideas will be received by an audience. From the usage of household products to a politician’s popularity, almost everything can be explored with this technique. But how are focus groups put together? And how did they come about in the first place? Hector Lanz explains how focus groups work.

I use to do a lot of focus groups. They were fun & you earn extra money. You can earn from $25 to.$100 depending on the product or services. They usually pay you in cash💵. My favorite one was rating songs from a specific oldies radio station. I think I made $75 for just giving my opinion. I had so much fun doing it that I probably would have done it for free, 😃💚💿...

I was asked to participate in a focus group a few year ago when I volunteered for a social service agency. We received free pizza and a gift card as compensation for our time. It was pretty fun.

You should also add the fact that companies such as Google collect our data and then sell it to advertisers.
They inform about the age and interests of people to the advertising companies without revealing the identity of their users and get money in return.

You sort of glossed over something tangentially related to the real problem with focus groups: humans are social creatures. In a group, people will often lie to save face, without even realizing they're doing it. It's called social desirability bias.

This is why I like the movie "They Live." Once the glasses are on Piper looks at the billboards and sees what they want you to see at first. But through the glasses he can see messages such as consume, buy, reproduce, sleep etc.

Makes you think..

I'm a little confused about the definitions given on the two types of research. I learned from my Master's of Information Science instructors that qualitative is best suited to making causal observations about the world by using already-made data and info to create speculation, and quantitative research is known for researchers to design and conduct their own surveys and interviews in finding this info to make a conclusion to benefit a larger audience. Not sure if the video switched these terms, unless anyone can provide insight that I may have missed?

FGI's major benefit i think is that it does not require siginificant amount of time and money compared to other methods. As a student learning sociology i find fgi appealing since im a student with limited time and money :)
