YouTube is NOT The Best Way To Learn Carpentry...SO I'M STARTING THIS INSTEAD!

Check Out Our FREE GUIDE: *25 Must-Have Carpentry Tools...Under $25 Each!*

Over the last couple years, I’ve had a growing feeling that teaching carpentry exclusively through YouTube videos is not the most effective way of doing my job...So, I’m starting something new!

The website still needs a serious overhaul, and I’m in the process now of developing my first online video courses. BUT I know that this will be the ultimate way to teach carpentry, construction techniques, trades knowledge, tool knowledge, and even elements of contracting and building code.

YouTube is an extraordinary platform, which contains an outrageously diverse range of topics...and it’s FREE FOR EVERYBODY. But the presence of the algorithm requires that content creators spend a lot of time thinking of ways to get videos to simply perform well.

Through my own online courses, I’ll be able to teach you carpentry in THE WAY I KNOW IT SHOULD BE TAUGHT! I can be far more thorough, and explore the appropriate topics without worrying about how the algorithm will handle them.

So, if you’ve ever REALLY wanted to learn about carpentry and construction, just hold tight. Soon you’ll have great video courses explaining everything from the bottom up, giving you total insight into how things should be done.

I’ll hope you’ll check out HONEST CARPENTER UNIVERSITY in JUNE 2023!

Hey everybody, videos will still be in the 5-12 minute range! They’ll just be bundled into larger courses built around learning one subject, and those courses available exclusively on my website. 🙂

Ethan, your explanation shows that you really know your audience and are genuinely trying to work within the youtube constraints. Most of us are here for your realistic and sound teaching. You are on to something good and I'm excited to see what you develop by yourself and with the collaboration of professionals you know. Keep up the great work.

At 65 my "what do I want to be when I grow up" days are behind me. As for the what, when, how, and show time lengths, etc are concerned, I would draw from your own building and trade experience, recalling what helped you the most—what was the most effective when it came to learning as a: DIYer, a contractor, and a YT content creator. Hoping for the best for you Ethan. *God bless.*

Ethan, as a casual YouTube subscriber I just wanted to say how much I have learned from you and to thank you for all the time and effort you put into your videos. I want to wish you the best of luck in your new venture. Your knowledge and demeanor make it feel like you would be a natural teacher. I look forward to seeing your new website. Blessings to you.

I’m 20 years old and I am a carpenters apprentice. I found your channel to be the most helpful to learn and tune up my skills. I appreciate you and everything you do.

HC Univ. is a fantastic idea. Due to time constraints and juggling so many different people; my first thought would be to use short time frames per session, while completing an overall large topic. I'll head out and answer questions. This is seriously a fantastic idea! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

As a "tool chick, " I'm excited about this!! You're so easy to follow and understand that I look forward to quick tips AND long tutorials on your new site. If you had an 8-hour start-to-finish table saw tutorial, for example, I'd bring my laptop out in the garage and follow along. I keep trying to get into a local table saw class but can never make it work with my schedule.

I do appreciate your YouTube vids; they are chock full of insightful straightforward insider information which helps me to comprehend carpentry and home repair better…and allows me to know when I can do something myself or when to call a pro. Since carpentry is not my profession, I most likely would not partake in classes, but if I needed a deeper understanding of a project, then a shorter one hour might be all my schedule and brain could tolerate. I’m a current subscriber and always interested, intrigued and entertained by your YouTube content. I know videos are a ton of work and I for one appreciate your dedication to making honest content. You and Steve are both fabulous. Thank you!

Great idea! Your channel is one of my favorites. Longer courses are great as long as there are chapters. I’ll often want to review a particular piece of a video but don’t want to watch the entire thing over again. Chapters also help when learning about something that I don’t have a clue about because I need time to digest the first part before going on to the next.

Honest Carpenter, you’re living up to your name, being honest with your followers, thank you! Both sisters here 61 & 71 years old have been your fans for years & you’ve taught us so much! Being a public school & university educator for over 25 years & now retired, you are a good teacher & we will continue with you on your new journey. By the way, I bought your 5 books of “Dungeon World” for my 8-9 year old great-nephews, awesome reads! Mr. James, wishing you the best from North Texas🤠

Ethan, you are an awesome teacher. I love your style of teaching. For me I want to learn to make shelves, and indoor and outdoor furniture. Everything from picking the right wood to techniques to make sure the furniture is esthetically pleasing is a challenge for me. But bite size videos as part of a detailed course would be what I can sign on to.

You’re a damn good teacher Ethan. A full coarse with 1/2 hr. Videos on your website would be very helpful. We can peruse them at our leisure depending on what projects we’re working on or what stage we’re at in those projects. Take your time setting this up. Your health comes first my man. Don’t burn yourself out trying to move too fast on this.

I love this idea! It would be so helpful if you started a newsletter list, so there’s no way I will miss course news if life gets chaotic around May or June. 😊

I've subscribed to your channel for years now & you're still the only tradesperson I've subscribed to. Your delivery style is clear & concise with extremely easy to follow instructions & great camera angles. Delivery time frames, I think using a combination depending of the variable complexities of what's being taught.
Honestly, I wouldn't own half the tools I do, including the most handy tool in the world, because you give me the confidence to try & I've succeeded beyond my expectations. So I would have to say, your particular delivery style is what makes your instruction videos so successful. Love your work.

I've been watching your videos for quite a few months and I believe that you do a great job educating your viewers and providing great entertainment. The online courses are a great idea and I wish you the best on this new adventure.

I have always said do whatever floats your boat. I view videos for short content. I have been done attending online or in person classes long time ago. More power to you.

Ethan, this is a wonderful idea! I'd say the longer the better, with it broken into sections. When I got into carpentry, it was a steep learning curve, filled with carpenters who were not always equipped to help someone with low skill take on more difficult tasks to improve quickly/safely. You're an amazing teacher, so I think you'll help a lot of people with this! Id suggest covering safe ripping/cross cutting of material--that's always a tough ones for new people in the shop .

My thought process has always been toward helping people with their projects. The YouTube algorithm was never considered. Do I reach as many people as you? No. That doesn't stop me from creating full-length tutorials or mini series. Some of my videos are an hour long, packed with all the information someone may need to complete their project. Do a couple of longer videos and see how they do. Your following is far better than mine and some of my longer videos perform very well on YouTube. Thanks for the great content and looking forward to the next steps.
