Why is NASA Building A Nuclear Reactor on The Moon?

Показать описание
Whenever we launch a rocket from the Earth most of its energy is used in fighting Earth's gravity. To save energy, NASA wants to use moon as a launch pad for further missions into the solar system. One of the big challenge is an energy source that would allow astronauts to stay there for up-to 2 months.
We can't use solar power systems there because a lunar night can last up to 14 days. That would make solar panels useless for a long time. So, one of the best solution is a nuclear reactor for which NASA has put out a request for proposals.
First of all, the reactor needs to be small. 4 meters wide, 6 meters long and less than 6,000 kg. It should fit inside a cylindrical container so it can be transported in a rocket to the moon. The reactor needs to be fully autonomous and should provide ~40 kilowatts of power for 10 years.
