Last month we took a look at Gen 1 and what the competitve scene was like back then. So today we're naturally going to be taking a look at what Gen 2 was like and build a team. How much did Gen 2 improve on what Gen 1 started? I guess you'll just have to watch and find out!

I have played a lot of Competitive Gen 2 on Smogon so here are my 2 cents for this video.

I feel like you really overestimate how necessary coverage is in GSC. One thing you realize when playing a lot of GSC Competitively (Especially if you are like me and play on Smogon a lot), there are a lot of Phazers and Rest-Talk Setters. That is because, in GSC, you are able to max out all of your EVs when playing online. Even if you were to hit pokemon super-effectively, most of the time you wouldn't be doing anything cuz everything has a lot of bulk. Moreover, Leftovers is a very common item in GSC Competitive, which further exacerbates the issue of coverage. For example, I would replace Surf and Psychic with Curse and Earthquake because with Curse, Aeroblast can sweep everything and Earthquake can hit everything else for anything that resists Aeroblast (Except for Zapdos and Skarmory).

That said, you can still manage offense fine in GSC. Explosion/Self-Destruct is just as necessary (if not even moreso thanks to everything having so much bulk) as it is one of the few ways to actually KO things. This is why Pokemon such as Gengar and Exeggutor are so common. GSC also introduced Spikes, which is key especially when you are switching out so often so you can actually apply some offensive pressure in battle rather than just wasting PP trying to hit at least something.

Snorlax is undoubtedly King in GSC. With maxed EVs boosting is already gargantuan HP and Sp Def., Snorlax becomes nearly unkillable. The best set for Snorlax would be either the Curselax Set (Curse, Earthquake, Double Edge/Body Slam, Rest), Sleep Talk set (Curse, Sleep Talk, Body Slam, Rest), Belly Drum set (Belly Drum, Earthquake, Double Edge/Body Slam, Rest) or an All Attacker set (Double-Edge, Earthquake, Thunder, Self- Destruct). Its is just so versatile that any good team would require Snorlax in their team, especially if you intend to be a serious GSC player.

As for the Team itself, I would fix Tyranitar's moveset up a bit. Rock Slide and Pursuit can replace Ancient Power and Crunch because Ancient Power has incredibly low PP and its effects are overrated since you are switching out so often and Pursuit can trap Gengar and the many Psychics in GSC.

Typhlosion is just a plain awful choice. His coverage options are incredibly limited and he is completely outclassed by other Fire-Types in GSC. Moltres is a superior Sunny Day Sweeper, Houndoom can Pursuit-Trap, Charizard has Belly Drum, Typlosion's only real defining quality is the fact it has access to Dynamic Punch, which even then blows thanks to its awful accuracy and Typlosion's mediocre Attack. Being the strongest of the three starters (which is already a contested statement in itself considering that Feraligatr overshadows it in-game and Meganium outdoes it in Competitive) isn't really all that great of an accomplishment especially when the starters in Johto aren't really all that great to begin with.

Umbreon's set honestly really needs a revamp. Phazers are so common in GSC that Umbreon won't really find itself accomplishing much with this set (Skarmory especially because it is immune to Toxic and laughs at Pursuit). I would go with the Trap Pass Set (Mean Look, Baton Pass, Confuse Ray and Moonlight/Toxic) so that Umbreon can actually fight back against the Phazers instead of constantly being annoyed by them.

I would also replace Kingdra with Suicune. Suicune while not having a Dragon-Typing is superior in every other way to Kingdra as it has Phazing Potential and it also doesn't fold to Snorlax the same way Kingdra does.

Steelix is an interesting choice, but I feel like the moveset you chose doesn't really maximize his fullest potential. I would go with the Curse + Phazer Set since Steelix's Offense blows.

Other suggestions for the team would be to add Either Zapdos and Raikou thanks to Thunder hitting almost everything for neutral damage and having 16 PP is really nice for long battles. I could also add Mew thanks to having very good stats and being one of the few Psychics to actually use Shadow Ball and have a Physical Boosting move in Swords Dance.

Gen 2 was my first Pokemon game and video game overall.
Its unfortunate that most of the dark type Pokemon could only be caught after you've beaten Johto gyms.

Umbreon is actually my favorite of the eeveelutions and is a great pokemon to have on your team.

I want to use that team on Gold version, the thing is I'll have to trade over a Lugia from Silver, the dragon scale item to use on Seadra, a Larvitar since it's late game, the metal coat item for Onix. So to start I'll have to use the starter most of the time until I catch Onix in Union Cave, get Eevee from Bill, and catch Horsea at the Whirl Islands. I feel like it's mostly a team to use during the after game and against Red

I’ve just played Crystal with Typhlosion, Donphan, Crobat, Bellossom, Espeon and Lanturn :) all brilliant choices for a gen 2 team

Ampharos is a must on a gen 2 walkthrough in my opinion. also, in the remakes feraligatr is the best starter, he's incredible with physycal moves like crunch, waterfall, ice fang and superpower

Could you do a video explaining how to calculate what type hidden power will be? How to train up your Pokémon in gen 2 for battle tower and WiFi battles? I’ve really been trying to get into gen 2 competitive but there are no videos that really explain how to train your Pokémon up and I would love a video or series of videos with all of that information. Thank you so much. This video is great

My team was:
Typhlosion (Fernando)
Umbreon (Eclipse)
Crobat (Batgril)
Ampharos (Zeus)
Red Gyarados (Leviathan)
Dragonite (Clair)

My team rocked Johto and Kanto, and this was on a school ipad back in my senior year. Some kid discovered a way to play roms through the Google drive and everybody was playing Pokémon. I was able to defeat Red shortly before the year ended. I miss my first Johto team.
