Hire Slow. Fire Fast.

So if your business is growing, you're going to be recruiting, and my only hope for you is that you're following this advice here. Now I know that you will have definitely heard this phrase before, "Hire slow, fire fast."

Chances are though, based on the experience that I've had in watching dozens of businesses, I find that it's the opposite. It's let's hire fast, let's get a body in to fill the position, and fire slow because we actually haven't got the mechanisms in place. We haven't set off with clarity. We haven't actually given the review process the right kind of attention.

So by the end of it, things bumble on, and we don't actually get the kind of outcomes that both of us want, us as employers, and the new person coming in as a new team member. It just becomes awkward.

So make sure that you slow your process down. A, have you got a recruitment process? But B, if you have to bring a couple of people back in for that last, final check, bring them in. Do the interviews. Make sure that you've got the right person from a first of all, an attitude and a culture fit. Then on the basis that they've got the necessary experiences as well. And even if they haven't, because they've got the attitude and they're the right fit, they'll learn quick enough.

But also, give them the chance to get off to a flyer. Give them a great induction. Give them real clarity. Make sure that you've got the review mechanisms set up so that you can check in and course correct, to make sure that ... they're going to be new to your business and therefore, make sure that they've got everything that they need in order to perform well.

That being said, if you've been really clear from the start and they know what's expected, and it's not working out, despite best efforts, then it's probably in both of your best interests to exit the relationship as fast as possible, before it becomes really awkward and really costly for both of you. So hire slow, fire fast.

Why not hire fast, fire faster?

Why be slow at anything
