There are few feelings in golf that are more satisfying than hitting a flush iron shot. But did you know that you can learn how to hit flush irons by learning the perfect golf takeaway?

In this golf lesson, Todd Kolb shows us how your takeaway has a big effect on where your club bottoms out in the golf swing, and shows us a cool golf takeaway drill to help us flush irons!

This gets into the discussion of whether, once the shaft is parallel to the ground at the beginning of the backswing, the toe of the club is up or the face of the club is still square, which makes it appear closed. Your takeaway appears to favor keeping the face square. The argument against the traditional toe up position is that it involves rotation of the arms to get the clubface back to square at contact, which adds timing complexity. The cupped lead wrist will usually lead to the face still being slightly open at contact, producing shots to the right (for right handed players). One other advantage of the face square takeaway that I saw recently is that it also allows you to keep your lead wrist flat or slightly bowed, while the toe up takeaway tends to promote a cupped lead wrist. I am not quite sure from this video exactly where you, Todd, come down on the lead wrist bowed vs cupped issue. However, it looks from this video that right at the top of the backswing your left wrist appears a bit cupped. Interestingly, your video about backswing mistakes where you show three different uses of that yellow foam ball on the backswing can take care of this. I am working hard to keep my left wrist slightly bowed, and keeping the arms squeezed together as if I was holding that ball promotes both the flat or slightly bowed wrist, plus the club face going back square not toe up, plus keeping the arms and chest moving together. A trifecta. I really appreciated that yellow ball video. At the range today it helped me fix some errors that crept into my swing yesterday during a round.

Hi Todd, I remember this great lesson from before. But I forgot to ask, will this same take away work for the driver and fairway wood swings as well? Thanks, your buddy Pat from Kapolei, HI🤙

Gave me a good explanation of what I need to focus on as I take club away. I was focused on a good shoulder turn. Now this provides a better takeaway that will also assist my turn.

This happens to me specially with my longer clubs. I am fortunate to have a 10x10x10 practice net in my backyard. Can’t wait to go correct this. Thanks again for the simple teaching techniques. Excellent channel.

Great video and content very helpful. My problem is I hit behind the ball or in the middle of the ball. I’ve really been working on this problem with little luck fixing it. Thanks for the pointers I’ll give them a try.

Great video Todd on hitting irons flush! This is the takeaway that I have been using. Although I concentrate on the right palm facing down toward the ball (same difference as your glove logo suggestion), As you, I find that this keeps the club face square to the ball on takeaway and at impact.

Something most teachers will not teach is hand path. Your hand path will determine where the club will travel, most golfers worry too much about swing plane which is important but if your hand path is correct your plane will be spot on. I always want my hands to come through between my toe line and the ball, if we throw your hands towards the ball you’re dead in the water and will always be over the top. If you have the correct hand path over the top will never occur and will have great contact if the take away is correct. Great teaching Todd I’m a subscriber and also a Team Titleist member.

Golf season still a month away I’m 64 and feel great ready to improve my 12/13 handicap. I will be trying your grip more in the fingers and overlap the pinky. I’ve been playing a compact backswing for years however I’m still flexible enough to complete my takeaway to horizontal and that increases my swing speed from 90 to over 100 just hoping I can keep it in the fairway also looking forward to improving my long irons and especially my short game where I struggle with to much forward shaft lean. I’m decent out of the sand.

Teaching the Lead arm and hand, the proper rotation, and teaching the Trail arm and hand to Stablize to club so the Lead arm and hand can rotate properly to increase accuracy and speed....Leland

Very helpful, and I have worked to keep elbows close together even to the point of trying to keep my right elbow straight.

Different issue: I have a rather stiff neck with age (74) and wear glasses. My body will allow me to turn farther than I can keep my head and glasses still --- if the ball leaves my glasses vision then the whole thing goes to rats. SO, I don't turn farther than my neck and glasses will allow and use a rather vertical swing as was taught years ago by Don Trahan. Thanks!

Hey Todd I really like your lesson. I do have a question as it pertains to the hands arching in. With the hands arching in your vertical line swing you say that the arm should move straight back and up. How does that happen with the hands arching in . I am in South Carolina. Thanks

Hi Todd. Would this advice on the first part of the takeaway be the same for a driver? Thanks, Kirk in San Antonio

Struggling with this right now. Not sure when I incorporated this death move and rolling the wrist over in take away
