Sometimes the most devious tricks we play are on ourselves. Confirmation bias and the sunk cost fallacy are 2 of the most common ways in which we deceive ourselves, sometimes to our benefit, but all too often not. What are they and how might we recognise them?

This episode is an excellent dissertation on the societal mechanisms creating and perpetuating the tribal rigidity that is currently causing our society to fracture. One of my main autistic focuses is societal stages of development and the mapping of political and cultural viewpoints. I am a systemic thinker who always enjoys discussions of large-scale psychological phenomena. I am very impressed with this episode and strongly encourage the creation of more videos like this. Excellent work, Quinn!

This series seems interesting ! About the topic, I'd like to advise people to be careful : trying to avoid certain biases excessively can be harmful too. Because I didn't want to be this person who doesn't question their opinions, I kept doubting myself and let place in my mind to points of views that are harmful to me (example : ableist ideas that say I am lazy and don't deserve a decent life if I don't sacrifice my mental health to contribute to the system like everyone else). Also, I don't have like-minded people around me, because I though it would be close-minded of me to seek those kind of friendships. I stared to allow myself to believe it's not healthy to give credit to those thoughts, that I have the right to actively avoid bigoted content, and seek for a community that understands me. Things are starting to get better, I am getting better at validating and controling (not erasing nor overly excusing) my thoughts and emotions.

confirmation bias & sunken cost go hand in hand with cognitive dissonance: we constantly seek affirmation of our choices, big and small.

It's easier to escape either if you like to think, to reason, to second guess yourself. Otherwise you might not realise it ever. Possibly lower IQ can make you more likely to fall victim for life. Though, I'm not sure how to access self in that regard because I'm autistic, and I can say about self that in some areas of life I'm completely clueless, relying on opinion of others, and paying the price of misplaced trust over and over again.

I find myself resistant to the argument that the media just promotes "bias, " and that there is too much "polarization, " precisely because the issue isn't that both sides are presenting lies on the opposite side of each other. On a broad scale, I think it's as Quinn described, the two sides that pretend to be bitterly opposed actually agree and disagree on the details. As a Marxist, I'm definitely saying to a large extent this includes Democrats and Republicans in the US. In that sense, the "radical, " or "extreme" opinion may ultimately be the correct one.

Quinn, I don't know if anybody has ever told you this but when I am not looking at the video, you sound almost exactly Dr. Geoff Lindsey (brilliant Linguist, can recommend) in voice quality, intonation and rhythm. Also, great content, although I have to say this is just basic media competency and psychology. Not just autists can benefit from knowing this stuff :)
I have noticed though that Autists often are especially prone to religious indoctrination which is leaning a lot on these two biases.

Your narration to your videos - especially when expressing dialogue - remind me of the programmes that'll engage me in front of the CRT as kid...😎

There was this one person I used to watch, expect later on I found out he was a hypocrite, Dan from the Aspie world, Dan admitted in one of his videos, calling some people idiots when talking about health, as some people got some things wrong, his wife, said to Dan not to say that, to that person, yet if Dan makes mistakes about Autism he'll never admit to it.
What I disliked was when Dan would say people with Autism do this, or all people with Autism do this, I couldn't relate to the majority of what he was on about, so I unsubscribed and didn't go back to his channel.
