As a current year 9, year 7’s seem so young now but here’s some advice I’ve put together for some new year 7’s:
1) Year 7 is so fun; take lessons seriously and please your teachers so you can have a good reputation in the school but don’t think that anything you’ve learned in year 7 will define future years, especially for GSCEs
2) Honestly, as an A grade student, all I’d recommend is just don’t purposely get detentions. They’re not fun and you’re not impressing the ‘popular kids’ by getting them either; you could be spending that detention time doing other things and making new friends.
3) I can’t stress this enough; don’t try to act all tough and hard in front of older kids. Year 7’s, even to the year 8’s look so small and you won’t be taken seriously if you try act tough. You’ll just pick fights and get told off.
4) Don’t worry if you get to the end of the year and you still haven’t decided on what you want to do as a job. Teachers will always stress on the fact that you need to have a passion but you honestly don’t.
5) Try to go to your first lessons with no set opinion on it. For example, don’t think that just because Maths was crap in your old school, that immediately means it will be in year 7. I used to hate maths and science and English in my middle school but now maths, english and (some of) science are my favourite lessons.
6) If you’re finding things hard, tell people and ask for help. If you’re lost, ask a teacher and if you’re stuck on a homework tell someone and ask for help. You’ll get nowhere struggling on your own and by asking for help, you’re getting your name known around the school which is good for school activities and responsibilities that could get you a good impression to the school.
7) MAKE FRIENDS!! Don’t be shy to talk to anyone, no matter their gender or whatever. It really doesn’t matter if you’re a boy hanging out with girls or vice versa. You won’t get judged and sometimes, big groups with mixed genders can be good. Also, this isn’t necessary at all but you can try to find friends with similar interests as you so they can introduce you to more people with those same interests. Friends are really good if they’re in all your classes too because you can help each other with homework’s and questions. Don’t try be ‘quirky’ and ‘edgy’ by being alone all the time because you’ll find it doesn’t really work like that.
8) Get involved in clubs and after school activities. If there are opportunities, take them because it really helps with getting to know the school’s dynamics and how things work. It also helps with learning the layout of the school and where different classes are etc.
9) Tests aren’t too important in year 7 but still take them seriously. Revising is a skill you have to learn so it’s best to practice a lot. I personally find that blank flash cards, which you can get from pretty much any shop really work well and HIGHLIGHT KEY INFORMATION!! That way, you’ll take it in better and find it easier. I always work at my desk and play music that hasn’t got words. For example, classical music or instrumentals because then you don’t get distracted and mix up information. For any anime or kpop fans, or even people who just like scenery, I’d recommend a website called LifeAt. It just plays a silent video of your choice eg an anime or a kpop clip and it has a study timer which you can personalise. So if you want to study for 40 minutes and then have a 10 minute break, you can do that with the timer. I always play it on my laptop in the background of revision because it kind of spurs me on. Also, if you don’t have your book already, ask your teachers if you can take them home to revise for upcoming tests. They’ll usually let you and if you’ve taken good notes, it makes it super easy to revise.
I hope that helped and have fun, find your way around school and just enjoy yourself because year 7 and 8 are basically the years where you can relax a little.
