Welcome to Hidden Civil Rights History, which explores often overlooked civil rights history in the Washington, D.C. region. My name is Gregg Ivers, and I am a Professor of Government at American University.

Howard University Law School is the oldest historically Black law school in the United States. No law school can claim more historic "firsts" than Howard, and no other law school in the United States has had such an outsized impact on American legal education, training public interest lawyers, and the development of modern civil rights law. Learn more about the legacy of the Howard Law School here.
