Sheriff Knight's Rightful Policing Strategy Workshop

Sheriff Knight with the men and women of the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office have always believed in the practice of rightful policing. Built upon social psychological research concerning procedural justice, rightful policing focuses more on how people are treated than the outcomes of that treatment. In an effort to educate local youth about the concept and show them what it means to be a deputy in the 21st century, the sheriff's office invited several young adults from the north Sarasota County community for a one-day Rightful Policing Strategy Workshop at Knight Trail Park in Nokomis. Students partnered with deputies and went through an array of mock scenarios including traffic stops, calls for domestic disturbances, suspicious persons, alarms in progress, and many others. Participants were astonished by the challenges they faced and several expressed the experience was life-changing.
