Correction don’t let a modern emissions intact diesel idle

I drove big trucks for 35 years and in The Northeast for many of them . When You started up a cold motor, You allow it to reach " OPERATING TEMPERATURE " Before You put a load on it .
This lets the Metal Components Warm up and gets oil flowing throughout the Engine .
Disagree if You want and Do what You want but Ive always Let ALL my Motors, From Harleys to Acuras and Freightliners to Chevys, Warm up before using them .

Got about 30 Caterpillar C15s in our fleet, run to a million miles before first rebuilt, every trucks is mandatory to warm up for 20 minutes for all of our drivers. Never had an issue. In fact we never even had a forced rebuild.

Guys, it's because it'll clog the diesel particulate filter!! (Dpf) If your truck or diesel vehicle doesn't have a dpf or is deleted or pre emissions, this doesn't apply.

Lmao all my diesels are older than me they require the warm up or they get cranky

Sorry Dave on this one I will disagree with you. I’ve been in diesel repair for over 40 years and caterpillar tells you in the operators manual to allow your engine 5 to 10 minutes warm up and cool down. The warm up allows the pistons and turbo time to expand. The cool down allows the oil time to cool the pistons and turbo bearings down to prevent oil from caking on them. I agree with 99.9% of what you say Dave and if my Duramax ever goes bad I’ll get to meet you in person.👍

I’m guessing Dave was talking about the new trucks with all the emission shit on them. My 1998 Dodge Cummins purrs like a kitten but I’ve always taken care of her, including a long warm up in the winter. 360, 000 miles and she’s never let me down.

Been watching these videos for a while now and yah know... for a mechanic you sure do have some pretty, clean hands.

Starting your whip and driving off the bat is like waking up in the morning and immediately running in full speed on a treadmill!! Idc, I change cars every few years anyways. If it’s cold af out, I’m gonna let my engine warm and still drive off gently. Done it before, still do it, and will continue to do it. A random persons advice is pointless when I don’t have any issues especially when my car is new.

That's exactly what I would say if I made a living rebuilding engines!

Funny. My uncle back in the 60s early 70s idle all night in the winter. Older diesel rock..

In Montana when its 40 below zero, you let your diesel warm up. That said, most of us have block heaters, and magnetic oil pan heaters.

Bro solved dpf issues at the cost of engine wear! Nice advice 👍

24 year diesel tech hear. I urge you to let them warm up a few minutes. They are by definition a direct injection engine and taking off immediately can cause damage to the rings causing premature oil consumption.

Even for newer design and emission standards engines, the basic thing to do is to start the motor, and wait till the idle rpms decrease to almost the pre-set warm idle. It lasts approximately about 1 min or a bit more, then you are good to start. Applying gas smoothly, revving gradually, not beyond the 3/5 of the rpm range. Mahle and Kolbenschmidt share opinions. Happy driving..
