The bane of all creativity

// Director's Commentary //

During this past winter break, I really wanted to make as many videos as I could. I made a fun vlog of my friend Anika and I making hot chocolate from scratch and I also filmed a short piano music cover video of Claude Debussy's "Clair de Lune." But the last short film I made was about four months ago so I hoped I could make another one. This one is really a short film... it's more like a very elaborate vlog. But at the same time, I consider it a short film because the way it was structured required all of the pieces and components a short film requires such as a script, lighting, music, and everything else.

This one was supposed to be more comedic than my work before. With each film I hope I can improve in a major aspect of filmmaking so this time I tried to tackle not just scriptwriting itself but making it funny and figuring out what works and what doesn't. I started generating ideas early in December of 2014 but everything went through a lot of revision. I would speak out the lines and see if it flowed smoothly, otherwise if it didn't work for me, it probably won't work for others. Writing for a comedic film is definitely more challenging because as the writer, you look at your jokes over and over again to the extent that it's not even the slightest funny and you sometimes aren't even sure if it's worth it. Yet, you have to keep in mind that other people have never heard it and they might appreciate it. Of course, that's almost a bit stuck-up to think like that but it's necessary.

Though this was a rather simple film to make. It was all in one location and voiceovers wouldn't be too hard. Editing was a little tedious since I took a lot of inspiration from YouTubers JacksGap and Bertie Gilbert. JacksGap emphasizes a lot on the display of words because it allows the audience to follow with the voiceover. Bertie Gilbert edits in a very particular way in order to seamlessly transition between scenes. Taking from my inspirations, I wanted to make something of my own. So, I made "The Creative Process," a film about making films. But it's not just "Step 1: Write the script, Step 2: Film it, Step 3: Edit it." Artists, whether they be painters or photographers, all experience self-doubt and not knowing if something is worth-while. It all starts with a great idea but once it starts to be executed, it doesn't exactly match what you had in mind. But through perseverance and overcoming all of that self-doubt, eventually something is produced.

All in all, I'm proud of the final product and I hope you all enjoy it!
