How to Care for Your Night Guard

The Night Guard that was custom made for you is a hard clear acrylic exterior with a hygienic soft thermoplastic inner lining. Please follow these instructions, as well as instructions provided by your dentist for optimal results in use and longevity of your appliance.
Wear:
• Brush and floss your teeth before insertion.
• When placing guard in. If guard feels tight, place the appliance in warm water for 15-20 seconds. This will quickly soften the inner lining allowing for ease of placement.
Care:
• Upon removal, the appliance may be cleaned with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste. Or antibacterial hand soap.
• Use care not to brush too abrasively on the soft inner lining. DO NOT use an abrasive tooth brush i.e. Denture tooth brush
• NEVER soak your appliance in mouthwash, or alcohol based rinses
• NEVER soak your appliance in bleach or harsh chemicals
• NEVER boil your appliance, it can distort.
• Keep appliance away from animals. They will chew appliance.
• Your appliance can be soaked in a denture cleaner for a maximum of 20 min, 1 time a week
• Store your night guard in a dry case when not in use
Replacement:
• Over time the appliance can discolor due to age.
• Guards should be brought in at your annual exam to a sure it is providing adequate protection.
• Be aware that eventual replacement of your appliance will be necessary depending on the severity of grinding as well as regular wear and tear. You can expect your appliance to last anywhere from 3-5 years.

I'm 12 and awaiting my night guard and I don't know what to expect but this a great explanation. Thank you very much

I had a upper night gaurd like this one, and trust me that hard gaurd does not glide over the teeth. 2 of my lower teeth got damaged badly from it, so my dentist molded a lower soft gaurd for me, and I love it. It is comfortable in my mouth, and no more chipped teeth like the hard upper one caused. I clean it with warm water in the morning and soak it in hydrogen peroxide when I'm not using it. I get a replacement every 6 month to 1 year depending on when my dentist sees fit

I used some of these cleaning methods before doing research or seeing this video. I guess I'm going the right way about it. Thanks for the useful info.

I read several articles stating that you weren't suppose to use toothpaste (too abrasive), soap's better and that alcohol is bad since it damages the guard.

Some night guards show signs of wear and tear and yellow stain in about 6-12 months of use.

I heard you were not supposed to use toothpaste on your night guard because it can be abrasive and create little rough edges or bacteria can live…

when I put guard in my mouth is forced open and dries up and I can't sleep. Would any one have any suggestions? It cost me 100 dollars, but I think it's too thick! Like I a preparing to fight mike Tyson

I wonder why mine says just to rinse it with cold water. By the way, it looks exactly like the one in this video

Why do some night guards have a greenish discoloration on one side?

My dentist said to use 1/5 bleach (hence 20mls bleach and 80mls water). I haven’t done it as I was reading it can damage the mouth guard.

Why does my Night Guard have a warning not to soak in denture cleansers or mouthwash?

My dentist told me not to use toothpaste to clean my nightguard. He said it would ruin the nightguard. He said only use soap, which I don't like because my nightguard taste like soap.

Can we prescribe night guard or occlusal guard to weight lifter?

Anti-bacterial soap contains alcohol. Doesn't that damage the night guard? Other videos say NOT to use alcohol (mouthwash) to clean your night guard.
