Chris Hayes: We are where we are—with both accountability for Donald Trump and the fate of the country hanging in the balance—because Mitch McConnell and Republicans refused to do the obvious, simple, straightforward thing. They refused to convict him for inciting the insurrection and to bar him from holding future office.

So why doesn't congress fix that little loophole of being president while incarcerated? Kind of embarrassing for the country no matter what party you support imho.

If Mitch and the rest of them would have handled their business than we wouldn't be in this mess.

McConnell is an unindicted co-conspirator

Anything and everything Mitch McConnell proposes from this point on should be tabled. His mental capacity can't be trusted. Payback for holding up Obama's opportunity to appoint one more Supreme Court Justice. Just saying

Mitch McConnell blew it? How about Susan "I think he's learned his lesson" Collins?
Actually ALL those unmentionable Senators.

Our democracy will never survive another four years of him. 😢

Nailed it again Chris. The GOP has become an embarrassing strain on our democracy and we'll be lucky if our democracy survives them.

Not only did they not convict, they didn’t allow witnesses.

I've been saying this since McConnell asked Republicans to do him "a favor" by not voting to impeach

I'm for getting rid of Ted Cruz. He's not for the people

I have always thought this. Mitch could have publicly said that he would vote to convict Trump and made a few phone calls behind the scenes to his mates and they could have got to the 66 votes they needed. But instead, Mitch thought that Trump would fade out to the background and the Republicans could forget about him. Stupid move, Mitch. Stupid move.

Yes, sad to see that the US is still in such horrible turmoil, all because Mitch McConnell did not do his job well on behalf of the majority of American People.

I blame Republican Senators who had two opportunities to terminate Trump’s political career and instead decided to place their party and position before their sworn Oath of Office.

This WOULD have REQUIRED CONSCIENCE, COURAGE, AND THINKING! Mitch McConnell, through ALL his years of SUCKING OXYGEN, has NEVER DEMONSTRATED ANYTHING LIKE THIS!

The GOP Senate failed to do its job. However, even if the Senate had convicted Trump, he still should have been criminally charged.
