The pain has always been in the red zone. You just didn't feel it before because the pain in the blue area was more intense. The pains are related because it's one tendon changing into the other. It's a sign of recovery

I'm just coming of the tail end of Patellar Tendonitis (Jumpers knee), lots of massage/foam rolling on the quads, ITband and Hip flexors helped a lot, my hip flexors have been so tight that it's a chain reaction. Been sharing this on my channel. I would really recommend the book 'Anatomy for runners' it's a godsend. Great to see you recovering Seth.

Glad to see you doing what’s best for your health, Seth. I’m happy to read some of the comments that say you’re healing!
No racing this weekend but logged a wet 20m/32km today as part of my first impression video of the Skechers GORun Max Road 4.

Hi Seth. Your positive energy is what gets me out the door to run. Thank you! Long run today went well. This week my coach had a shift in miles a bit due to me coming back into training for London. Nothing serious at the moment! Just building a solid base. Thanks for doing what you do!

I came in 53rd out of 300, at age 63 with a time of 24:15. 2nd in my age group!

I'm glad your knee is getting better. There is still a chance to run fast in Houston
This weekend I got a flu so I can barely move... I hope I'll back in few days

My runners knee pain moved exactly like yours, from the front to the inside. I injured it on May 26th, 2019 at a 5K. and it is still not totally pain free. My leg seized up as I crossed the finish line and slowed down. It was 100 degrees that day. As I drove to this race I told myself I didn't need to do the race...but I did it because I'd paid for the race. LISTEN when your mind gives you a warning.
I did PT and now cross train, walking, biking, and aqua-jogging and running one or two days a week on grass (with a knee compression brace).. The aqua-jogging (not swimming) seems the most beneficial. You can do knee highs, butt kicks, and interval training.
Good luck!

I’m sorry to hear about your knee Seth. But keep following the PT game plan and give your body time to heal and you’ll be back in action before you know it. I had IT Band syndrome that caused lateral knee pain and it took about 6 weeks to calm down. Like you said patience is key!

Knee cap is patella. Blue marked part is patellar tendon. Red marked part pain is more commonly associated with runner's knee, although pain can shift, of course. Runner's knee is broader term which can be caused by several problems. Patella is held by patellar tendon but also is centered by medial and lateral retinaculum, side tissues which are supposed to pull patella equally and thus center it perfectly in the middle. In case this balance is disturbed by overuse, hit to the knee, misalignment of bones, overpronation, unbalanced muscles or patellar damage, you get "runner's knee" - patella doesn't track right and starts damaging surrounding structures or itself. The most important thing is to know the exact cause.

My personal experience was the combination of running (overuse) and previous injury (hit to the side of the knee) which caused damage to retinaculum which in turn hardened and started to pull patella out of alignment. At the end the pain was 10/10 and mobility was significantly impaired. I had lateral release surgery which is cutting side tissue (retinaculum) and realigning patella, also back of my patella was badly damaged so it had to be cleaned and honed. After a release the most important thing for me was to maintain muscle balance so my patella is tracking correctly.

Hi seth,

I had the same exact problem in the same exact area. I'm not as fast as you (Im training for a 2:28 marathon) but I train 100% of the time on asphalt . the One workout that helped me and eliminated the pain was Front Squats with medium heavy weights holding the bar . I do it twice a week and I feel amazing. If I stop this work out for couple of weeks the pain comes back.
Give it a try it might help :D

Best of Luck and much Love.

I've been dealing with patellar tendonitis for over a year while running around 30 mpw through ups and downs in pain throughout. I finally saw a PT a few months ago (I know--I should have seen one a lot sooner), and I've had success in reducing my pain down to about a 2 at the best through a routine of exercises, foam rolling, stretching, and dry needling. Dry needling helped tremendously! But I realized that the exercises I was doing were too easy, so I bought a 140lb band to do stationary squat holds. Hopefully, this will get me back to pain-free--it's been a journey to say the least.

QD: Long run went well yesterday, just about to turn over 1500 miles for the year. It looks like your healing up nicely - hopefully you'll be able to jump back into training soon!

Seth - you know how it goes....when the knee is ready it will tell you. No fun. Bears just lost so no fun here in Chicago. I ran 6.5 miles....best run yet at my age. you will bounce back SO fast and in the meantime this community is learning so much.

Hey Seth! I’m currently in PT for my left knee pain and I have a similar story. My knee pain started inside the knee from what I thought was IT band and then shifted entirely to medial knee pain in a week or two. There is no evidence of meniscus tear, but my PT thinks there is patellar tendinopathy and/or meniscus “involvement”. In my case, it’s due to mechanics- my knee drops slightly inward as I run.

I had to take one week off from running and only crosstrain (with just three weeks before my race) and come back at a fraction of my regular mileage. I was cleared to run my race if I listened to my body and understood that there was a high risk of re-injury. I decided to go ahead and keep it smart on race day. Still had a lot left in the tank at the finish but PR’d, so my fitness was still there.

I’m still working with PT because it sounds like it will be at least 6-8 weeks from the start of exercises for my injury to heal. Trusting the process... MAN has this been a humbling experience!

I feel your pain and the uncertainty that this can bring! Thinking happy, healing thoughts for you and always rooting for you!
