Digging straight down/up is perfectly fine, with feather falling/protection 3 or 4 lava can’t be too much of a problem.Digging straight up is fine too, once your above y-11 there is no lava basically anywhere and for grave just place a torch at your feet

Here’s a tip: if you wanna escape the mines, put a torch on the same block you’re on and mine up. The torch will save you from falling blocks. Then use the same blocks to build up. Once you can’t build up anymore (you’ve gotten to the top) repeat.
