QUESTION- Have a question about harvesting sunflower seeds or saving sunflower seeds to plant next year? Post in the comments section of this video!

Saving sunflower seeds could not be easier to do. You can do it either 2 different ways.

1. Cut off the sunflower head after the flower dies back and then scrape off the sunflower seeds. You would need to let the sunflower seeds dry out a bit after you harvest them.

2. Cut the sunflower head off and let it dry out in the sun. This is the lazy way to harvest sunflower seeds. The sunflower seeds will easily pop out once it is completely dried.

We have a few hundred acres of sunflowers near us and when they are blooming, it is the greatest section of highway to drive by... These plants are amazing!

Thanks for the very helpful video. I got a bunch of giant sunflowers from the grocery store and now they are dry. Instead of dumping them I decided to save the seeds and try to grow them next year in my yard in Texas.

Synergy is new to me but absolutely beautiful and productive. Thanks for your video and showing how to save the seeds. Last year I bought this flower at Lowes. It was infested with spider mites. I took a chance and cut the dried flowers and the seeds were abundant. Gorgeous and plentiful this year. 👏

Thank you for taking the time to create this very helpful video. This year I planted the four foot tall sunflowers with smaller blooms, 4-5 inches, which are still blooming and the large head sunflowers which died off early. I plan to plant the smaller sunflowers in rows in the back of the garden next year. Thank you again for the helpful tips in saving the seeds!!!

I love the mammoth ones. Had them as kids and just thought they were the coolest to see in full bloom. Still do!

My dad was an avid, master gardener. Back in the day when I was a kid, his garden always included sunflowers. At harvest time, he cut them off and placed them upside down on newspapers in the greenhouse until they dried out. He built a wooden frame - like a wooden box but with no bottom - and put a metal screen on top. Not chicken wire - that wasn’t sturdy enough. A good, metal screen. Stapled-nailed it down on top of the wooden box. When it was time, we put on gloves and scraped the sunflower heads on top of the metal screening and it took all the seeds out for us. We dreaded doing it - but now, he has passed on, and I am so grateful for the memory and instruction of harvesting seeds. The price of black oiled sunflower seeds has gone ridiculously high. I will replicate my dad’s harvest method and start growing our own for bird seed. Reply to this comment if you want more info on the screen! I’m hoping that handy thing is still around and if so, I’ll use it. Otherwise, will make one of our own. Oh - if you get a lot of mess in with the seeds - we used a small fan on low speed to blow it out of the seeds - or a colander to help separate. Enjoyed your video :-) thanks for sharing. You remind me a bit of my dad and his love of gardening. It’s amazing how smart our parents get as we get older 😊😇

I bought a bouquet of sunflowers and was hoping to save the seeds and plant more. Can you grow sunflowers in pots? Or do they get too big?

My questions are:
1 I have watch alot of videos before yours. No one said how dry to let them get a I had several out I different stages some to me were super dry almost a beige color.
2. They all say to watch or rinse them they let them dry a day or so. What do you think is the best way?
My friend gave me some Dwraf sunflower seeds. I absolutely love.
They grow like a little shrub or bush.
