What is an ISV?

Jagdish Sahasrabudhe, Global VP, Channel Products and Innovation at SAP America explains what an ISV and how it can be a profitable business model or type of business.

What is an ISV?

ISV stands for the independent software vendor. Pretty much the term has been used historically to define companies that are producing intellectual property, and not only service companies but they have a software product and intellectual property that they are part of a larger software ecosystem. For example in the 1960, the term came out of IBM where IBM had a lot of software in the financial and banking industry. There were many other smaller software players who wanted to be in IBM’s ecosystem, and that is where the term independent software vendor came from.

Today every large software manufacturer has a partner ecosystem of which the independent software vendor is one of the most fundamental to add value to the customer. From the customer perspective, they look at the core software, but the core software is not good enough for them to take them further. They need innovation that is coming from the independent software vendors. Together the core software, as well as the independent software vendors' solution, jointly add up to a significant value proposition for the end customer.
