Because our culture is still very primitive (compared to Europeans ie the founders of western society), we still value physical strength above all else. Those who are physically the strongest get the most respect, so you could say we still follow the rules of the animal kingdom in many ways. Polynesian women are treated as less than in relation to Polynesian men. When the boys play outside we're expected to stay in and do chores because as girls no good can come from letting us go outside. Our voice in a traditional setting is oppressed and we are expected to let our husbands answer if we have one. So for us women due to both aspects of our culture, we become quite competitive against men from an early age. I personally love that aspect of myself because it did gain me respect amongst my brothers and male cousins.
