The Light of Christ by Fr. Thomas Joseph White is a superb introduction to Catholicism for upper high school students and adults offering a semi-Thomistic apologetic. A bit challenging, but very rewarding in the knowledge you will obtain. Also excellent are Trent Horn's books which are very readable and explain the tenets of Catholicism well. Personally, I think everyone, young adult and adult, should take a primer on logic and critical thinking (argumentation, syllogisms, etc) as they provide the believer with an ability to not only understand the hows and whys, but also to identify the flaws and fallacies of the non-believers. Peter Kreeft and Edward Feser are also excellent.

I haven’t read too many apologetics books, but my mother did get me Beginning Apologetics 1: How to Explain and Defend the Catholic Faith by Father Frank Chacon when I was a teen.

I don't see that anyone else mentioned it so let me add an interesting, off-beat recommendation. "Radio Replies, " 3 volumes by Fr. Leslie Rumble and Rev. Charles McCarthy. These books present, in a questions and answers format, transcriptions from Catholic radio apologetics from around the 1940's (not sure of the exact dates). I can't find any bio on Rev. McCarty, but Fr. Rumble was an Australian priest whose program was called "Question Box." Interesting source for pre-Vatican II apologetics.

Although not strictly apologetics books I've found "Rome Sweet Rome' by Scott Han and the "Surprised By Truth" series edited by: Patrick Madrid to be helpful by showing you the mind of someone who is anti-Catholic or doesn't know about the Church and what things they found helpful in understanding Catholic beliefs. I am currently reading "A Daily Defense" by: Jimmy Akin which is good in that each day covers one objection to the church and a short page long answer with bible quotes and other references, and so is a apologists 101 type book. - J

Some of the best apologetics books:
The Drama of Salvation by Jimmy Akin (to refute faith alone salvation and understand the real teaching of salvation)

Behold your mother by Tim Staples a biblical and historical defense of the Marián doctrines

The Case for Catholicism by Trent Horn
Answers to old and contemporary Protestant objections to the faith.

The godless delusion by Patrick Madrid is good for arguing against atheism

Drama of Salvation by Jimmy Akin I love listen to him on Catholic Answers. I am looking into the catholic church and was going to Mass until the virus hit. I am waiting to RICA this fall .

Answer me this! and Where is that in the bible? are great apologetic books by Patrick Madrid. I’ve just gotten into reading Catholic authors and those two books are really great for providing answers to commonly asked questions and attacks to the Catholic faith, they also provide citations to scripture so that we may be really prepared to answer and defend the faith as you described in the interaction with your friend. I look forward to the full list so that i may add them to my book wishlist and further grow my collection of Catholic books
