Love these katas of open hand against a Katana. As an Aikodoka, many of the movements, grabs, locks, and disarms are familiar but executed a bit differently. Thank you for bringing us both Parts 1 and 2 of this very cool set of katas.

The techniques probably must be taken in context.
I see them making sense in armour, or as training for "desperate measures".
The chances of getting into grapling distance vs an armed opponent(wihtout beeing armed yourself)...are rather slim even for a very skilled fighter

Seki Sensi is so fluid, his balance is unbelievable. I always rewatch and just stare at his feet. Arigato o7

This is excellent muto dori kata demo, thank you so much for

I like how the attack is textbook to an unarmed opponent. Strike to the hip, so that the opponent can't duck or jump. Yet, a person skilled in such arts can reverse the attack.

02:29 Attack from a safe distance, this is the first lesson I have learnt. and keep in mind that the purpose of these is to demonstrate, and they are done so slowly on purpose so that you can see them clearly. In a real fight, the quicker and safer the better.

Interesting. Seeing alot Aikido locks to subdue the opponent.

Shogo, The videos are getting better and more interesting. I did learn something from this kata today! I was very surprised that a katana can be taken from an attacker.
I don't think I would try it, but I would love to train with this technique. Can Sensei show a kata on how to take a knife from an attacker in the near future? There are so many people
being stabbed and killed in the US right now; its awful, but I would like to see the technique. Thank you Seki Sensei and instructor Shogo!! 🙂

definitely interesting, but if you spin dodge. a natural reaction would probably be pull back or circle instead of standing still. i can see it possible to grab a spear even if they pull it back, though not easy for sure. seems easier to go for the head while spinning than to try to grab a katana or spear at the right angle. but i dont really train katana or yari fighting and disarming. Just comparing different styles, and wondering how someone would react realistically in most martial arts demonstrations.

I love this. Thank you for posting this

In addition to the spear kata, it's also easier to throw the attacker off-balance due to their lower hand forced to go lower than what is allowed by their arm normally, forcing the knees to bend and pressuring it with balance of the body. By pushing the upper half of the spear down, you apply heavy force to the upper body backwards, which stumbles the attacker because their center of gravity, and their center of balance due to it, is leaned forward causing them to be weak to pushes at the upper body, and specifically pushes starting from about the head.
The katas here really make use of the understanding of one's center of gravity and the limitations of joint rotation to be effective. Sure, these are fixed training, but in a real battle, this comes in handy since there's no fixed movement in a fight.

Something I'd like to see in this channel is Shogo attacking Seki-sensei as if he were actually trying to kill him, after the first demonstration, just to see how reliable some of these techniques are.
I just see Shogo stopping after the attack to let Seki-sensei disarm him without any effort at all, and I keep questioning the video for that
