Nice mold! By the way, we (Molders in the Navy) used to smoke dowels before pouring. The soot added a barrier between the wood and the lead allowing the dowels to be pulled from the solid lead handily. We used an acetylene torch to soot up the dowels but you could use a candle I suppose. Enjoyed the series!

Quite an enjoyable series, I'm not a hunter or a fisherman, so it's more the exposition of the process with the discussion of alternatives that I like (and thanks for being a champion sport and joining in the fun, Mrs Pete!)

If you soot the inside of the mold with a candle flame the sinker wont stick as much .The peice of wood could be replaced with a length of stainless wire, again sooted which goes all the way through the mold with a loop at one end . the sinkers could then be slid of the wire when they came out of the mold .

There are dozens of styles of decoy weights and I'm sure just as many ways to pour them. I personally use Jordan's method but I insert a copper wire hoop into the top of the weight while it's hot to attach my decoy line to. Then when I pull my decoys out of the water I put the loop over the head to keep them from getting tangled up. Happy Hunting

Mr.PETE as small and delicate machining you do on the small engines, taper on dowel with sandpaper would be a snap with your skills.

Those came out great Mr. Pete! There's virtually no seam that I can see. Cadbury would be jealous!
A Mrs. Pete cameo, a YouTube first! She almost caught you with the goods!
Thanks for the series!

Liar, liar, pants on fire.
Ok. The score so far, Mrs. Tubalcain's chicken roasting pan, spoon, and if I remember correctly, a couple of pillowcases, a few washcloths, probably some toothbrushes, and who knows what else.
I'm shocked and mildly outraged. 😜
Good series of videos.
Thanks.

The egg shape makes them a lot less likely to become snagged on submerged brush as well. Mrs. Peterson's addition was priceless! Thanks, Mr. Pete! :-)

Awesome set of videos! My egg mold has a thru hole in it, I run a piece of 1/8” welding rod through it and can pull it out and have the hole in the weight.

I mentioned in the first video about Dad poring jig heads, we also poured other fishing weights. Years ago a friend needed some triangular weights used for surf fishing, I just used the original and poked them in our NC red clay suspended a swivel above it with a tooth pick and poured them. My buddy couldn’t get over that one.

I still have the plumbers lead pots that Dad had with the ladles, what he did was use a Colman camp stove to heat the lead pots up. We had old plumbers lead, some sheet lead, and those wheel weights. I also still have the same Lyman ingot molds just like yours. This brought back pleasant memories of my childhood with my Dad. Thank you

Years ago I remember reading an article in one of those "Free to the trade" tech journals about an outfit that was pouring ceramic into a mold and using spaghetti for the passage holes, after setting they then fired the ceramic and the pasta simply vaporized out of existence during the process, I always admired the economy of production the guys used. ☺

Nice video as always. I did similar thing but for the core I used steel wire (3mm) so I was able to just punch it out of the sinker with a hammer. I remember we used to put some kind of grease on the steel wire to make it easier to punch out.

MrPete222, I love your channel and watch it all the time! This is my first time commenting on one of your videos. As a bullet caster, I have studied the usage of lead and led exposure for years. Please take some time and research lead exposure, its effects, and safe handling. By drilling and especially by sanding lead on a belt sander, you are contaminating your environment with lead particulate. Also, the melting of lead needs to be done within the correct temperature range and correct ventilation. Lead exposure occurs when lead dust or fumes (melting temps too high) are inhaled, or when lead is ingested via contaminated hands, food, water, cigarettes or clothing. Lead entering the respiratory and digestive systems is released to the blood and distributed throughout the body. Its affects can be devastating. Working with lead can be an enjoyable hobby and safe when the correct precautions are observed. I know many will scoff at my warnings but the danger is real. I know that you are a safety conscious person because many of your videos start out with an old safety message or poster. Thank you for the many hours of enjoyment and education from your videos!!!! God bless you!!!!
