Wilderness Roads: India | Forging Paths in the Most Remote Territories | Free Documentary

Zanskar is an ancient realm in the heart of the Himalayas. In this isolated enclave, the highest populated valley in the world, 12 000 Zanskaris live in total autarky. To put an end to this isolation, the Indian government has launched one of its most spectacular construction sites. Hanging on the cliff face, following the meanders of the Zanskar River, the road is progressing very slowly. The works apparently started 40 years ago, but the means employed are inadequate. For the inhabitants of Zanskar, the wait is endless and many despair of seeing the road reach them one day.

Yet Zanskar is getting ready to open its doors to the world and may undergo some major upheavals much earlier than planned! Because one man alone, has also decided to built a road. This man is neither an engineer, nor a millionaire, and even less a visionary! His name is Tsultrim Chonjor, he’s 78 years old and he’s a Buddhist monk! Tsultrim has been using a bulldozer to dig through the mountain for two years. Nothing seems to be able to stop this very atypical monk, who’s about to cross the Shingo La Pass, over 5 000 metres above sea level. Everyone admires Tsultrim’s perseverance, but will he manage to open the road to Kargyak, the very first village to the south of Zanskar?

PS: This is the same village as in the Ice Walkers documentary.

Border Roads Organisation later took the responsibility for completing the road project and Tsultrim Chonjor was honoured with India's fourth highest civilian award.

Calling this monk a great man is an understatement. Imagine what more he could have accomplished if he had more help from the start.

The couple that were hiking the trail, were distraught by the thought of a road coming in, and destroying, what they feel, should remain untouched by modern technology. But, the people who actually live in these villages, want more access to goods, and doctors. Which would you choose? I for one, think that if the people wish for better access to the things they need, that takes a higher priority than destroying some flowers. lol

typical middle class westerner, all about them than seeing bigger picture. it sure help locals greatly and for those less able people disability's they can also get to see wild places. since my health turned for me to get to places i love to photograph i need a road, i even off road in my city car to get close as i can to planned location. the road opens up makes life better for locals and more accessible for more people as not all can walk for hours in high attitude i know i cannot but a road now can take me to places what was impossible. as a westerner im happy for locals and sure hope it makes life better for them

I find it upsetting that some Westerners prefer to see some countries underdeveloped because it will ruin their preferred lifestyle of loving nature because their countries have developed way more to the extent they no longer wish to live there. Why would that woman say she hopes that the development of a road would not be a negative thing for the people when clearly it’s to allow them to travel safely as cut the long journeys…because she wants to escape from the life in her country?
