ESTABLISHING A CONSISTENT PRE-SHOT ROUTINE | Paddy's Golf Top #27 | Padraig Harrington

One key element in playing good golf, is developing an effective and consistent pre-shot routine. Once a player has established the shot you want to hit and have picked a target, my belief is that a player should focus on one key thought as they approach the ball, and return to that same thought on each and every shot during the round.

One of the best golf tip sessions I have seen on the internet Paddy! Started golf at 29. Got down to scratch at 30 ( yes, I had some time off work ). Been trying with USGA.GSGA qualifying tournaments etc... Could always hit it tour far, great at most aspects of the game. However never done well in tournaments. To take range/fun golf to the tournament. Problem 1, Built my own clubs and A/B tested then until I found the full set via eBay etc... . Problem 2. Decided to just hit fades with the driver, never a draw. Problem 3. Gave up on hero swings and played to what I typically hit when on the range. Took me 20 years to learn what was just described in this video ( and I consider myself smart, so much for that )! Started finally breaking par, in a tournament. Only happened once so far, this year in a Champions Tour pre qualifier, after 22 years. Problem 4. Still from 120 yds and closer, I am only 25% successful ( this is my final problem to solve to finally reach my potential ). Even yesterday, my bad holes were all caused by 1 issue, distance control on putts, chips, pitches and full wedge shots, purely, because of the the slope of the lies you get on the course and greens ( i.e. I dont practice this because I have a flat backyard ). Sometimes I cannot avoid these lies due to the course in general i.e. I rarely mess up off the tee. How do I conquer what is new i.e. a shot I haven't seen before? DO I just need to find all these possibilities in my practice and put in those hours as well? I assume that's a yes! One final note. When I finally dialed in my equipment and tee shots started doing what they did on the range, in tournaments, it completely changed my mental state about the game. Fitting should take a long time. It requires massive amounts of A/B testing different equipment. It made such a massive difference to me i.e. why could I never get 13 clubs to basically behave the same way i.e. it goes where I aim, no matter if its a driver, 2 hybrid, 6 iron, SW etc.... with the same swing.

This is the best instructive YouTube channel hands down. Emphasis on clubface control and using natural athletic movements for the technical stuff. Amazing content on non-technique related side of golf.

Listened to the No Laying Up podcast after the US open and wanted to see your exaggerated practice swings. I love this tip and am going to implement this. I also play the best when all I think about is the target. This is the best video I've ever seen for golf. Nothing about mechanics here, all in the head. Keep shit simple, love it. Thank you!

I’m so stoked for your channel Padraig! All your tips have been so practical, concise, and well done. Us amateurs greatly need this and I really appreciate the quality content. Thank you sir.

If you’re ever wondering a next tip, I think you should show whatever you think is the most important thing that you haven’t already went over. You’re the master and probably know what we need better than we do. I haven’t watched all your clips YET and it seems like you’ve covered most aspects already, so maybe something on gear like picking the right clubs and shafts. I really like reviews of new clubs, so you could do endless amounts of those if your sponsors allow it. Thanks again

Paddy seemed reluctant to do this one, but it might be his best video yet. This was brilliant.

Literally just had the best range session ever focussing solely on pre shot routine and then focussing on very small targets. Great video. Hopefully works on the course tomorrow but I have full confidence it will!
