Super Typhoon Mawar has entered the Philippines area of responsibility and become Super Typhoon Betty. But it is not behaving the normal way, which is making everyone feel uneasy. We are tracking the storm hour by hour to see it's path and will update you on the island situation as it happens.

Our names are Jmayel, Sacha & Story. We traveled to the Philippines Siargao island and fell in love with island life, now we want to make that life more permanent.

Here in Winnipeg Canada, the second half of May was the hottest thing we experienced for spring. During the day it was up to 30 deg and night time can get low to 16deg but at least its not humid. I'm pretty sure we broke the record for the hottest spring in May. The only thing that scare's me is golf sized hail if we continue this 30deg weather through July- Aug.

Spent the majority of my life on the east coast of Florida. Either a couple miles in or a couple of blocks from the beach. You do get used to it, but you also know to be prepared, pay attention and evacuate when needed. I'm now living in a state on the gulf coast and moved further in land after the first couple of years. The main issue here is flooding and I want no part of that. Yes, the calm before the storm is eerie, even wildlife goes silent. Take care and God bless.

Storm center is 1, 250km NW and moving to the NNW. Not even what could be described as a glancing blow for Siargao Island. Resume BAU and pray for those who may be impacted.

We were hit by typhoon washi or sendong last Dec 16 2011 in Cdo (first time in CDO to have that storm since 1970). We were flooded. We lived close to a river but the dam up ahead broke.

I think you don't have to worry that much at this time of the year till August because most of the typhoons go Northward, so most of the time it hits Luzon, Calayan Islands, and Batanes. Then late on the year, ber-months till February, that's the time it hits Visayas and Mindanao. Of course, I'm not saying not to be alert or anything, but somehow the pattern seems to be like that. Apps, Windy seems to be a very liable app when tracking typhoons very useful for me at least.

It may be a prudent idea, Jay, to have some window protection built into your new home. Something like shutters or even some kind of anchors with which to firmly attach plywood sheeting when the need arises. Keeping a number of correct-sized plywood sheets in storage would be a good investment against potential damage and also for peace of mind. Maybe all windows wouldn't need covering; you do need to see what's out there, I guess. But taking some precaution by covering some windows--maybe larger ones--would be well worth the investment, I'd think.
