The best way to change the strings on your acoustic guitar

Just wanna throw my 2 cents in on this one. In my experience, the biggest problem people have with breaking strings is knowing how much slack to give yourself once you thread it through the tuning peg. Too little slack and you end up snapping the string, too little and you end up with a wadded mess on the peg from winding it too many timea to get tight. I've found that pulling it tight through the peg, and then pulling back one fret length from the nut gives enough slack to make at least 3 revolutions to give you a neat coil on the peg. Hope this helps someone, and if anyone else has any tips I'd love to hear them!

I usually change my string every 6 months or so. I wash my hand before playing and clean my guitar daily. Also, I used Elixir nano coated strings, partly because my favorite finger-style guitarist, Sunha Jung, uses them. I thought it was just pure marketing crap at first but these strings last many times longer than the Martins and D’dario. A guitar is like a friend you can talk to when you are happy or sad or whatever mood you are in. A large portion of the sound quality comes from the guitar body, not the strings, so just make sure to cherish your guitar by cleaning and storing properly. That is the best advice you will ever get.

Tip: don't worry about keeping the string in the nut slot, it will pop in there by itself. It's better to use both your hands to manipulate the strings around the tuning peg.
Also make sure to bend the string around the tuning peg as soon as you can to keep it from popping off while you wind up the string

(1) Very important to put the bridge pins back in the same order
(2) A good idea to check & tighten the machine head post retaining nuts while you have the strings off. They get loose from playing and can create a vibration.
(3) thought I was the only one who bent the string near the ball before installation. Never saw anyone else EVER do you are good.
(4) After tuning guitar to pitch I give the strings a good pull at the bridge. I always hear the strings pop a little in the bridge pin grooves. Makes the guitar settle down & stay in tune better.
