I thought it was a pretty lousy argument seeing as how the solution was to just buy off the poor instead of restructuring society to where they didn't need help

Pace Keith Woods and JFG, you've make a valid point against the shareholder system. Whatever the true percentage of "the people" who own the large public corporations might actually be, the individual share owner is in a pretty powerless position to influence company policy.
It would be a pleasure to hear you discuss this problem and then come up with some ideas for the improvement of shareholder democracy. It's not unrelated to the problem of national democracy. Both of them ask the same question, How could we could make our governors (whether corporate or state) listen to us and act according to our wishes? Or do we have just one option, that of selling our shares and emigrating?
