US congressional delegation makes surprise visit to Taiwan

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen met with US Senator Tammy Duckworth and other US lawmakers Tuesday morning and reiterated the importance of American and Taiwan partnership on Indo-Pacific security and economic collaboration. In a statement Monday, China’s embassy in Washington said it “firmly opposes” the surprise visit to Taiwan, and has lodged a “stern representation" with its diplomatic counterparts. The visit comes after President Joe Biden recently took his first presidential trip to Asia -- and reignited a conversation over the US diplomatic posture toward Taiwan and mainland China.
